Job description

As an Engineering Designer, you will play a key role in the development and delivery of complex transportation infrastructure projects, leading significant portions of roadway, multimodal, intersection, and complete streets design efforts from concept through final design. In this role, you will apply advanced engineering and design principles to develop innovative, practical, and cost-effective solutions that meet client objectives, regulatory requirements, and community needs. You will work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, planners, and technical specialists to prepare high-quality design documents, analyze project constraints, and resolve technical challenges. Leveraging your experience and engineering judgment, you will serve as a technical resource to project teams, mentor and develop junior staff, and help ensure designs are accurate, constructible, and aligned with industry standards and best practices. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to impactful transportation improvements while supporting project delivery, client satisfaction, and the continued growth of the transportation practice.

What You’ll Do:
  • Lead the development and preparation of detailed transportation design plans, specifications, engineering reports, and construction cost estimates for roadway, intersection, multimodal, and complete streets projects, ensuring technical accuracy and constructability throughout all phases of project delivery.
  • Perform advanced engineering and design calculations, analyses, and modeling related to geometric design, roadway alignments, drainage considerations, traffic accommodations, and multimodal facilities while ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and client-specific standards.
  • Serve as a technical lead for assigned design tasks, coordinating closely with roadway, traffic, drainage, utility, structural, and environmental disciplines to integrate project elements and resolve design conflicts efficiently.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and day-to-day guidance to junior designers and technicians, including reviewing design work, sharing best practices, and supporting professional development initiatives.
  • Conduct quality control and quality assurance reviews of plans, calculations, specifications, and technical documents to ensure compliance with project requirements, engineering standards, regulatory criteria, and firm quality procedures.
  • Assist Project Engineers and Project Managers with project planning, resource coordination, schedule development, budget tracking, task management, and the successful delivery of design milestones and client deliverables.
  • Evaluate design alternatives and develop innovative, cost-effective solutions to address project challenges, improve safety and mobility, minimize impacts, and enhance long‑term infrastructure performance.
  • Participate in client meetings, design workshops, and coordination meetings with stakeholders, agencies, and utility owners, providing technical expertise and assisting with the presentation of design recommendations and project progress.
What You’ll Need:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.
  • 2+ years of Texas transportation engineering design experience.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Experience with MicroStation & OpenRoads Designer.
