Job summary

Work Skills Corporation (WSC) seeks a Washtenaw Area Job Mentor to provide on-the-job coaching and training for participants with barriers, helping them learn tasks and professional behavior. The role develops individualized rehabilitation plans and collaborates with employers and families to support long-term job retention.

Responsibilities include preparing progress reports, guiding participants, and ensuring adherence to quality standards while maintaining strong communication with the team

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; experience in rehabilitation or related human service field preferred.
  • Must have reliable transportation and ability to travel within a multi-county area.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse participants.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct, on-the-job coaching and training for participants.
  • Develop individualized rehabilitation plans and implement behavior-modeling techniques.
  • Educate employers about participant abilities and barriers to employment.
  • Prepare timely progress reports and share feedback with staff and families.
  • Collaborate with program staff to promote inclusive workplaces and job retention.

Job description

Washtenaw Area Job Mentor

Reports to: Training Services Supervisor or Employment Specialist Supervisor

Objective

The Job Mentor supports individuals with barriers receiving services from Work Skills Corporation (WSC) by providing direct, on-the-job coaching, training, and guidance to help participants develop workplace skills, adapt to new environments, and achieve greater independence. The Job Mentor works collaboratively with employers, program staff, and families to foster inclusive workplaces and promote long-term job retention.

Areas & Responsibilities
  • Job Training:
    • Assists persons-served in learning job tasks, workplace expectations, and appropriate social and communication skills.
    • Develops individualized rehabilitation plans.
    • Utilizes behavior-modeling techniques to ensure that the person-served learns appropriate work behavior.
    • Educates employer regarding the abilities and functional limitations of the person-served and address barriers to maintaining employment.
    • Utilizes fading techniques to help persons-served become more independent in performing tasks and trains follow-up staff when appropriate.
  • Program-Specific Reporting:
    • Prepare and submit timely progress reports based on program requirements, tracking participant development and employment outcomes.
    • Provides ongoing feedback to both persons-served and team members.
  • Quality Standards Compliance:
    • Apply and maintain knowledge of Work Skills Corporation’s required quality standards, ensuring all services and interventions meet or exceed organizational and accreditation requirements.
Essential Functions
  • Regularly sit, stand, walk, and use hands to handle or feel.
  • Observe visual and auditory cues from clients.
  • Communicate effectively in person, by phone, and in writing.
  • Review and analyze complex documents and data.
  • Perform repetitive motions with hands and wrists using a computer keyboard.
  • Occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to drive to various employment sites, meet with clients, and attend trainings as needed.

  • Customer/Client Focus – Strong focus on understanding and meeting the needs of participants and referring agents, ensuring their satisfaction and success.
  • Flexibility – Adapts to changing demands, schedules, and participant needs to provide the best possible service and outcomes.

None

Work Environment

Assignments vary in location and types of employers (e.g. retail, manufacturing, service). Working hours vary dependent upon job coaching assignments. The position is classified as part-time.

Physical Demands

Ability to sit, stand, walk and occasionally lift or carry up to 25 pounds.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or its equivalent. Experience in a rehabilitation or related human service field is desirable.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Must have access to reliable transportation as position may require frequent travel within a multi-county area.
