Job summary

DES Architects + Engineers is seeking an experienced Job Captain - Interiors to translate design concepts into constructible documentation across interior projects. You will lead technical development, coordinate with trades, and manage documentation to ensure code-compliant, permit-ready drawings.

You will collaborate across disciplines, gather data from manufacturers, and maintain quality and budgets while advancing DD, CD, and CA phases.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years of dedicated interior design experience with strong technical documentation and execution across project phases.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in translating design concepts into detailed construction drawings and specifications.
  • Deep knowledge of current building codes and accessibility standards (California Building Code, ADA) governing interior spaces.
  • Strong understanding of integrated building systems (architectural, structural, MEP, civil) and their interface with interior design.
  • Experience contributing to DD, CD, and CA phases.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, written and verbal.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU'LL DO

As a Job Captain - Interiors at DES Architects + Engineers, you will be instrumental in translating innovative design concepts into constructible realities. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of complex design principles coupled with a strong focus on technical precision as you develop and refine detailed documentation, specifications, and drawings for a diverse range of interior projects.

  • Lead the technical development and execution of interior design packages, ensuring all construction drawings, specifications, and details are accurate, complete, and code compliant
  • Work with the interior design team to transition from concept and schematic phases to permit ready documentation
  • Lead all subcontractors and trades coordination efforts throughout the permit documentation phase to ensure seamless integration of design intent
  • Actively collaborate with team members across disciplines with a focus on technical coordination and integration of interior elements
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturers, vendors, and consultants to gather technical data, confirm product specifications, and ensure material application
  • Develop interior specification sections, ensuring material and product selections are technically appropriate and documented
  • Conduct rigorous quality control reviews of all project documents for technical accuracy, coordination, and completeness across all disciplines
  • Review project budgets for consistency with documents and industry standards
  • Assist with the technical review of submittals for conformance with design intent and specifications
Requirements
  • Minimum of 8 years of dedicated interior design experience, with a demonstrated track record of excellence in technical documentation and execution across all project phases
  • Demonstrated proficiency in translating design concepts into detailed construction drawings and specifications
  • Comprehensive understanding and practical application of current building codes and accessibility standards (e.g., California Building Code, ADA) governing interior spaces
  • Strong working knowledge of integrated building systems (architectural, structural, MEP, civil) and their technical interface with interior design elements
  • In-depth knowledge of sustainable design concepts and products
  • Proven experience contributing to Design Development (DD), Construction Documents (CD), and Construction Administration (CA) phases
  • Proficiency in Revit and Bluebeam is required
  • AIA qualification, preferred or on track for IDP / NCARB Testing
  • LEED ID+C, WELL, and Fitwel credentials, preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with an emphasis on managing detailed technical deliverables and meeting deadlines
  • Agile and eager to work in various market sectors with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members across internal disciplines
  • Involvement in local design community a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Interior Design or equivalent experience required
  • Hybrid work environment, work onsite in our Redwood City or San Francisco office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without any restrictions or requirement of sponsorship now or in the future

The typical pay range for this position is $80,000 - $115,000 in total compensation. Compensation depends on the individual's skills, experience, education, and geographic location.
