Job summary

GDIT in Herndon, VA is hiring a senior data engineer for ETL, data transformation and analytics. You will design and maintain data pipelines, map data, and support complex data processing across multiple systems.

You will also troubleshoot issues, document findings and collaborate with engineers and external partners to drive improvements. The role requires 8+ years in data engineering, a engineering degree or equivalent experience, and TS/SCI with Polygraph clearance.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of related data engineering and ETL experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, or equivalent 5 years of job experience.
• Experience building and maintaining data flows with NiFi, Pentaho or Java.

Responsibilities

• Provide ETL, data mapping, analytics, and maintenance of data systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide support in the areas of data extraction, transformation and load (ETL), data mapping, analytics, operations, databases, and maintenance of data and associated systems.
• Develop and manage complex data flows, or make significant enhancements to existing pipelines.
• Troubleshoot complex problems and provide customer support for the ETL process.
• Resolve complex hardware/software compatibility and interface design considerations.
• Conduct investigations and tests of considerable complexity.
• Research emerging technologies to determine impact on application execution.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with teammates, customers, and external partners.
• Prepare written and verbal communications on analyses, findings, and project progress.
• Write and maintain technical documentation.
• Advise hardware engineers on machine characteristics that affect software systems, such as storage capacity, processing speed, and input/output requirements.

Required Technical Skills

• Demonstrated experience with Java/J2EE, XML, JSON, Python
• Demonstrated experience translating data insights into tools or analytic capabilities that inform operational decisions and/or improve processes.
• Demonstrated experience with relational databases (e.g., Oracle / MySql)
• Demonstrated experience with search architecture and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, ElasticSearch, ArcGIS)
• Familiar with servers operating systems; Windows, Linux, and cloud infrastructure.
• Familiar with database methodologies.
• Familiar with source code management and integration (e.g., GitHub/GitLab, Jenkins).
• Familiar with ETL frameworks such as SAFE, FME, Pentaho, or NiFi.
• Ability to work well in a fast‑paced, constantly evolving work environment with a focus on continual process improvement and a proactive approach to problem solving.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

• 8+ years of related data engineering and ETL experience
• Bachelor’s or technology degree in engineering or a related specialized area/field, OR equivalent 5 years of job‑related experience
• Demonstrated experience building and maintaining data flows in NiFi or Pentaho or Java
• Excellent organizational, coordination, interpersonal and team‑building skills
• TS/SCI with Polygraph clearance
• Location - Herndon, VA

The likely salary range for this position is $174,250 - $235,750. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
