Job summary

ZEISS is seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer for a three-year assignment in Japan, with eventual transition to a long-term U.S.-based role in the Boise, ID area. You will install, maintain, and service advanced semiconductor systems, traveling internationally for training and collaboration.

You will coordinate with global teams, troubleshoot complex issues, and deliver training to local staff in Japan, while ensuring excellent customer service and documentation throughout the project.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Engineering, Optics, or Mechatronics or 5 years of optics/mechatronics experience.
  • Strong customer orientation with flexible service hours.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical or mechanical engineering documentation and schematics.
  • Technical experience in the semiconductor industry advisable.
  • May travel internationally; adapt to multiple time zones.
  • Hands-on mentality with proactive problem solving.
  • Experience in optics industry preferred.
  • Excellent written and spoken English; proficient in Japanese.
  • Comfort with Windows, word processing, databases, and CRM tools.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and service ZEISS 3D Tomography Inspection & Metrology and Mask Shop Solutions systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and execute repairs.
  • Serve as primary on-site contact for customer in Japan, ensuring high-quality service.
  • Coordinate service activities and communicate status with customers and ZEISS teams worldwide.
  • Manage spare parts inventory including ordering and returns.
  • Document all service activities and quality updates promptly.
  • Support installation and service with experts in Germany and the U.S.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and optimize service processes.
  • Develop and deliver training to local teams in Japan.
  • Act as liaison across Japan, Germany, and U.S. teams.

What'stherole?

We're offering a unique opportunity for an experienced Field Service Engineer to take on a three-year international assignment based in Japan. In this role, you'll work hands-on with ZEISS semiconductor systems, supporting installation, preventive maintenance, and ongoing technical service.

Fluency in Japanese is required, as you'll collaborate closely with local teams and customers. Throughout the assignment, you'll also engage with global experts and travel internationally for training and knowledge exchange.

Upon successful completion of the assignment, the role will transition into a long-term position in the United States, primarily based in the Boise, Idaho area.

Do you qualify?
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Optics, or Mechatronics is preferred, but not required and may be substituted with 5 years of industry experience in the area of optics or mechatronics.
  • High customer orientation with special engagement and flexibility in regard to service hours.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical or mechanical engineering documentation and schematics.
  • Technical experience working in the semiconductor industry.
  • May periodically be required to travel internationally.
  • Single-handed work ability, strong hands-on mentality, and the ability to assert oneself.
  • Experience working within the optics industry is preferred.
  • Good communication skills written and verbally in English.
  • Proficient in spoken and written Japanese.
  • Experienced with Windows operating environments and word processing and/or email applications as well as with databases or CRM systems
