Job summary

Allegan County is seeking a dedicated janitor to maintain a clean, safe environment for staff and visitors across county facilities. You will sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, wash walls and restrooms, and assist with routine maintenance to keep areas secure and presentable.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, vacuum, mop, scrub, wax and polish floors.
• Dust walls, wash ceilings, clean fixtures and wash windows.
• Move cabinets, boxes, furniture and equipment to clean areas; remove stains.
• Seasonal tasks: sweep walks, rake leaves, cut grass, snow removal.
• Empty wastebaskets and remove debris; restock restrooms with supplies.
• Disinfect sinks, faucets, urinals and other fixtures; restock towels, tissue and soap.
• May supervise inmate trustees on custodial tasks.
• Perform minor repairs to mechanical equipment and plumbing.
• Ensure safe use and storage of cleaning products.
• Conduct safety checks to ensure doors and windows are secure.

Job Summary

The janitor position is responsible for maintaining a clean working environment for all staff and visitors, ensuring all areas are safe.

Starting Wage

$19.98 per hour, full time

Responsibilities and Duties

• Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors using industrial vacuum cleaners and scrubbing and buffing machines.
• Sometimes using ladders, dusts and washes walls, cleans ceilings and dusts and polishes light fixtures. Washing windows inside and outside.
• Moves cabinets, boxes, furniture, crates and equipment to clean areas. May remove stains from such surfaces as rugs, drapes, walls, and floors using chemicals and cleaning solutions.
• May also sweep walks, rake leaves, cut grass, remove snow or perform other incidental seasonal tasks.
• Empties wastebaskets and removes other debris.
• Cleans and disinfects sinks, faucets, urinals, stools, showers and other fixtures in restrooms. Restocks all restrooms with towels, tissue and soap.
• May assign work to and supervise inmate trustees assigned to custodial tasks.
• Performs minor repairs to mechanical equipment, plumbing and various other items.
• Ensures proper use and storage of chemical cleaning products.
• Conducts safety checks to ensure all doors and windows are locked and building is secure before departure.

Education

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Experience

1. Math skills necessary to measure chemicals and cleaning solutions and reading skills necessary to read instructions, safety materials and government regulations.
2. One to two (1-2) years of experience in custodial services. Prefer at least one (1) year prior experience in the maintenance and repair of building and mechanical systems.
