Job summary

Marion-County-Indiana-Sheriff is seeking a Jail Control Operator (JCO) to contribute to jail security and inmate management. The role focuses on monitoring CCTV, controlling electronic doors, and relaying information to inmates and staff.

The position requires no direct inmate contact, with responsibilities including documenting inmate status, updating records, and performing related security duties. Candidates must meet education, health, and residency requirements and be able to work any shift.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma.
  • No battery or felony convictions.
  • Must be able to work any shift or duty schedule.
  • Must submit to fingerprinting, drug screening, psychological examination, character investigation, and physical examination performed by a physician designated by the MCSO.
  • Must be in sound mental and physical health.
  • Civilian Employees shall have his/her principal place of residence within the boundaries of Marion County within six months of employment.
  • Independent Judgment is necessary for this position.
  • Must be able to work independently under limited supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor closed circuit television screens for security breaches and jail rule violations.
  • Ensure doors are secured and controlled; manage electronic door access.
  • Provide information verbally to inmates on various subjects.
  • Observe inmates who claim to be ill and summon appropriate assistance.
  • Interact with inmates, visitors, and staff to exchange information about inmates and procedures.
  • Enter information on inmate location cards and maintain inmate activity logs; write incident narratives as needed.
  • Perform computer updates and status inquiries.
  • Handle duties related to jail security and paperwork for documentation, incarceration, and release of inmates.
  • Perform other duties of comparable level/type as required.

Provides effective Jail security. Jail Control Operator (JCO) are generally assigned to the Jail Security Section in a position requiring no physical inmate contact.

Monitors closed circuit television camera screens for evidence of security breaks and violations of Jail rules.

Assures doors are properly secured and locked. Controls security of and access through electronic doors.

Provides information verbally to inmates on a variety of subjects;

Observes and communicates with inmates who claim to be ill and summons indicated assistance.

Interacts with other employees of the MCSO and visitors to exchange information about inmates and/or to answer questions regarding jail procedures, accidents, or incidents, or status of individual inmates.

Enters information on location cards for each inmate (and may insert in computer); maintains logs on inmate activity; writes narratives report on jail incidents, as needed.

Performs computer updates and status inquiries.

Performs any duty relating to Jail security, which does not require physical contact with inmates and performs paperwork relating to the documentation, incarceration, and release of inmates.

Performs other duties of comparable level/type as required.
