Job summary

The Allen County Jail in Fort Wayne, IN seeks a Confinement Officer to uphold safety and security of employees, inmates and visitors. This full-time, nonexempt position offers comprehensive benefits and opportunities for promotion, with shift options (days/nights) and overtime as required.

Core duties include security checks, searches for contraband, supervising inmate activities, transporting inmates, booking procedures, medication administration, and documentation.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Valid Driver’s License for transporting inmates.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Defensive Tactics training completed or able to be completed.
• Since hire, complete ILEA Jailers Academy within one year.
• Completion of Allen County Jail First Time Officer training program.
• Experience with Microsoft Office and basic software.
• Ability to write reports and communicate effectively.
• Ability to work in a team environment and manage stress.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for security and safety checks of employees, inmates and visitors.
• Searches individuals to be detained for weapons and contraband.
• Oversees detainees' activities including visitation, commissary, mail and calls.
• Inspects jail facility for security and welfare of detainees and cleanliness.
• Transports and escorts inmates to jail, court, visits and medical facilities.
• Inspects, accounts for and distributes meals for inmates.
• Performs booking procedures, photographs detainees, and completes intake reports.
• Receives and logs money and personal property per orders.
• Ensures inmates receive daily medicine and medical treatment when needed.
• Conducts routine shakedowns of cells and dormitories for contraband and documents findings.
• Performs accurate data entry.
• Occasionally testifies in court.
• Interacts with other law enforcement and the public regarding inmates.
• Very frequent interactions with inmates.
• Attends seminars and in-service training as required.
• Performs all other duties, including overtime as required.
