Job summary

The Decatur County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Jail Administrator to oversee daily jail operations, inmate custody, bookings and records under the Undersheriff. You will manage administrative and financial functions, ensure safety and order, and respond to incidents while coordinating with law enforcement and courts.

Minimum qualifications include 18+ years, a high school diploma or GED, a Kansas driver’s license, CPR certification, and the ability to pass a background check and obtain NCIC

Jail Administrator, Decatur County Sheriff's Office

This position is responsible for the daily administration and operation of the Decatur County Jail. Under the direct supervision of the Undersheriff, this position performs duties involving custody, care, intake, processing, and supervision of inmates, as well as the administrative and financial operations of the facility. You oversee the day-to-day activities of the jail to maintain a safe, secure, clean, and orderly environment for inmates, staff, and visitors. You perform inmate bookings and dressing-out procedures; supervise and monitor inmate activities and conduct; maintain inmate records and property; conduct and administer offender registrations; manage inmate funds and commissary accounts; process jail-related expenses and purchases; maintain jail supplies and inventory; conduct required Intoxilyzer inspections and checks; and ensure compliance with applicable laws, department policies, and facility procedures. You respond to inmate issues and incidents as they occur and take appropriate action within the scope of your assigned authority. You communicate with inmates, law enforcement personnel, courts, medical personnel, and members of the public as necessary to carry out assigned duties. Salary and Benefits:

Pay Rate: $15.50/hour starting

This position can be considered a promotional step position. The current Jail Administrator is being promoted to the Patrol Division and will be attending KLETC. This will also evolve into an entry-level supervisory position. Decatur County is looking to fill (for the first time) a part-time Corrections Deputy position, and that position will report to the Jail Administrator if filled.

About the Office:

The Sheriff’s Office has four full-time Law Enforcement Officers, several part-time LEO’s, one reserve deputy, one full-time Jail Administrator, and one part-time Corrections Deputy position (currently unfilled). All full-time sworn LEO’s have assigned vehicles and cover call as needed. Part-time LEO’s, once fully signed off for solo patrol, can cover shifts or call as needed. The Sheriff’s Office maintains a 12-bed jail facility in the courthouse. It is strongly preferred that deputies with the Sheriff’s Office live within the County or immediately adjacent to the county border for on-call coverage and emergency callout needs. Outside residency requests will be considered by the Sheriff on a case-by-case basis.

The city of Oberlin has a four-person police department, while the Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement services for the rest of the county, including the smaller cities. Due to current city staffing challenges, the Sheriff’s Office has a contract with the City of Oberlin to cover gaps in PD coverage. The Sheriff’s Office and the Oberlin Police Department enjoy an excellent working relationship, and currently all city PD officers are also sworn deputy sheriffs with authority throughout the county.
