Texas Department of Transportation's Houston District is seeking an ITS Operations Technician I to monitor traffic via ITS systems and coordinate incident management in the Houston area.

The role involves dispatching maintenance staff, communicating with multiple agencies, and updating traffic data while maintaining safety and service during shifts from 1:30 PM to 10:00 PM. A valid driver’s license and experience in traffic operations are required.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience in Traffic studies, analysis, computer ops, electronics, traffic management, telecommunication ops.
  • Customer service experience is an asset in a customer facing role.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor traffic via ITS and control equipment; disseminate information to the public and other agencies.
  • Dispatch maintenance employees and alert first responders via phone, radio or other electronic means.
  • Update traffic management database and communicate with governmental and private entities within the operations center.
  • Use two-way radios to interact with other transportation and law enforcement agencies.

TxDOT's Houston District is seeking a detail-oriented person interested in traffic and incident management. This role is critical to ensure the safety of citizens traveling through the greater Houston area. The ideal candidate will have a background in data entry, dispatch and/or traffic management. This position requires some flexibility in desired work schedule. Customer service experience is an asset in this customer facing role. Communicating with multiple entities and keeping the Traffic Management Center following TxDOT's mission is key.

ITS Operations Technician I monitors traffic via computerized surveillance and control equipment located within an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) managed area. Disseminates information to the public through various forms of communication. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities as well as the traveling public. Dispatches maintenance employees and alerts first responders via telephone, radio or other electronic means. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details but defers all unusual challenges to the Lead worker.

Advises the general public of traffic conditions through the use of computerized variable message signs, highway advisory radio and/or low frequency television broadcasts.

Disseminates traffic information through various communication devices to other governmental agencies located within the operations center and/or managed area.

Monitors traffic flow and conditions through the use of loop detector systems, closed circuit television systems and/or automated vehicle identification systems.

Updates traffic management data base.

Uses two-way radios to interact with other transportation and law enforcement agencies.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

2 years of experience in Traffic studies, analysis, computer ops, electronics, traffic management, telecommunication ops. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Customer Service experience - preferably in telecommunications, basic computer skills required

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Conditions of Employment
  • Employees must be able to report for duty at Houston Transtar during inclement weather or other emergency activations. This role is essential to operations and may operate in non-typical hours.

To be selected for and continue employment in this position, the selected incumbent must maintain the security or integrity of the agency’s critical infrastructure and will be subject to regular assessments of criminal history and/or reviewed for connections to foreign adversaries.
