Job description

Case Western Reserve University is committed to providing a transparent estimate of the salary range available for this position at the time of its posting. The salary range is between $65,779 and $97,038, depending on qualifications, experience, department budgets, and industry data.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general supervision, designing, and implementing mid-range services to keep University core technical services running at specified service levels to enable reliable and robust services. Design, develop, implement and manage solutions to provide connectivity to the university network for members of the university community. Participate in the development, implementation, and management of the university network’s routing and switching infrastructure. Participate in the development and implementation of solutions to provide access to the university network. Focus is on services of extremely high risk, complexity, availability, and visibility that serve the needs of the entire university.

Essential Functions
  • Voice and Telephony Systems: Design, develop, implement, and manage network-based voice, mobile communication, and IP telephony systems for the university community, including Unified Messaging, Webex, VoIP solutions, and secure remote access. (40%)
  • Network Infrastructure and Connectivity: Develop, implement, operate, and monitor network connectivity, LAN/WAN routing and switching, performance metrics, capacity planning, and network security. Proactively address performance, troubleshoot issues, and maintain policies and procedures for both routine and emergency operations. (30%)
  • Project Management and Collaboration: Participate in and lead project teams, assign tasks and priorities to staff and student employees, collaborate with the Project Management Office to establish schedules and budgets, and work with vendors and consultants to meet network infrastructure requirements. (15%)
  • Documentation and Support: Field after-hours emergencies, develop and maintain thorough system documentation, and interact with customer service and network users for support and problem resolution. (14%)

CONTACTS

Department: Contact with all levels in UTech to provide assistance and network operation.

University: Interact with the university customer service organization and network users as necessary for support and problem resolution.

External: Contact with vendors to facilitate solutions to the connectivity requirements of the university network.

Students: Contact with student employees working inside UTech. Minimal contact with the general student population.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibility.

Qualifications

Education/Licensing and Experience: 3 years experience; Associate's degree or relevant certification. Bachelor's degree preferred- OR- 7 years of experience. Cisco CCNA certification strongly preferred.

Required Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of network communication technologies and protocols and the ability to apply that knowledge to design creative solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills are required. Ability to diagnose and provide solutions for problems with little or no outside assistance. Ability to build on existing experience to solve problems never before encountered is critical.
  • Ability to operate under tight time deadlines and changing priorities as part of a team.
  • A service-oriented collaborative approach to customer and peer relationships.
  • A high level of integrity is required, as the individual will be required to work with sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with fiber-optic and copper (twisted-pair) physical network technology.
  • Expertise Cisco switches and routers, including installation and configuration, IOS and NX/OS.
  • Familiarity with optical and Ethernet networking characteristics and protocols.
  • Familiarity with Webex control hub, Webex calling, or other UCaaS experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Cisco UC product line including CUCM, SME, Expressway, UCCX, and Emergency Responder.
  • Understanding of Ethernet, Spanning Tree, VLANs, and other Layer 1 and 2 LAN protocols and technologies.
  • Proficiency with routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP.
  • Familiarity with a network multicast infrastructure and network QoS infrastructure.
  • In-depth knowledge of IP, ICMP and related Internet protocols.
  • In-depth knowledge of UDP and TCP end-to-end and protocols running atop them, such as HTTP.
  • Knowledge of VoIP systems and their operation at a network infrastructure level.
  • In-depth knowledge of SNMP and other network management protocols.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring and management technologies such as Solar Winds, Elastic, and NetBox.
  • Familiarity with network security as it relates to network infrastructure, routers, and switches.
  • Proficiency with block-structured programming, shell scripting, and basic CGI scripting.
  • Familiarity with application programs such as spreadsheets including Microsoft Excel, word processors including Microsoft Word, graphics, databases, diagnostic utilities, terminal emulators, and communication/ network software.
  • List those measurable or observable knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or behaviors that are required to succeed in performing the essential functions.
  • Willingness to learn and work with artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies.
  • Ability to demonstrate successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical office environment. The position will require access to residence halls for trouble shooting network infrastructure and access to the data centers. The position may need to respond to after-hours emergencies.
