Job description

Primary Purpose:
Supervise students assigned to in-school suspension (ISS) for disciplinary reasons. Maintain a highly structured and orderly
environment. Work under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher on a daily basis.


Qualification
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED, Valid Texas educational aide certificate; Must successfully pass MISD para test
48 College Hours/ Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred


Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to work well with children
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use personal computer and software to develop spreadsheets, databases, and word documents

Experience:
Three years experience as classroom aide or 30 semester hours of college credit with emphasis on child growth and development


Essential Job Functions:

  • Work with certified teacher and campus administrators to create and maintain an orderly and highly structured classroom environment.
  • Work with individual students to complete assignments given by classroom teacher.
  • Consult classroom teachers regarding student assignments.
  • Distribute, collect, and check student assignments for accuracy.
  • Maintain individual files of completed student assignments and return to classroom teachers.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations, and Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Record student attendance and discipline referrals according to established procedures.
  • Supervise students assigned to ISS during lunch and bathroom breaks.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events when required.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Assist with administration of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Accuracy – work is neat and correct and completes all work assigned.
  • Personal attributes – neat and clean in dress and appearance, works with others in a positive manner, adapts quickly to changing situations, and arrives at work on time.
  • Student Relations – shows respect to students, shows concern and encouragement for students and has a positive attitude when working with students.
  • Public Relations – Interacts well with students, parents, teachers, peers, and the general public and promotes a positive image of self and school.
  • Report to work in a timely manner according to assigned schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrator that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
