Irrigation Technician
Job Summary

Supports and advances the operation, maintenance, and optimizationof campus irrigation systems, with responsibilities that scale fromseasoned experience to technical leadership and system oversight.Duties include operating, programming, and maintaining the centralirrigation control system; troubleshooting and repairing componentssuch as filters, pumps, and piping; and performing preventativemaintenance and inspections to ensure system reliability. Positionsat higher levels take on increasing responsibility for complexdiagnostics, system programming, irrigation scheduling, andsustainable water management. Advanced roles provide technicalexpertise in irrigation design, mapping, and construction review;lead projects and staff; and collaborate with FacilitiesManagement, landscape teams, and external partners to supportcapital improvements and campus development. All levels contributeto maintaining a safe, efficient, and sustainable campusenvironment while adhering to University and industry standards andbest practices. A valid driver's license is required.

This position may be filled at Levels II, III, or IV depending oncandidate qualifications and department needs. Final levelplacement will be based on experience, skills, and internal equityconsiderations.

Responsibilities

Irrigation Technician II: Independently performsmaintenance and repair of irrigation systems. Operates and programsthe central irrigation control system. Troubleshoots systemcomponents, conducts preventative maintenance and inspections, andtests and adjusts water chemistry. Coordinates with irrigationcrews and landscape maintenance to support effective irrigationscheduling.

Irrigation Technician III: Advanced irrigationsystem operations, including programming, troubleshooting complexissues, and performing major repairs. Develops irrigation schedulesto support sustainable water use. Reviews construction documentsand provides input on irrigation design and system mapping.Collaborates with Facilities Management and project stakeholders onirrigation strategies.

Irrigation Technician IV: Serves as the technicalexpert for campus irrigation systems. Oversees system programming,optimization, and long-term performance. Leads irrigation projectsand staff, supports capital planning, and provides expert guidanceon irrigation design and mapping. Reviews construction documents,conducts site assessments, and collaborates with internal andexternal stakeholders to ensure alignment with university standardsand sustainability goals.

This position may be filled at Levels II, III, or IV depending oncandidate qualifications and department needs. Final levelplacement will be based on experience, skills, and internal equityconsiderations.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher educationcan be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience(Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related workexperience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following joblevels:

  • Irrigation Technicians, II: Requires at least 1year of related experience.
  • Irrigation Technicians, III: Requires 3+ years ofrelated experience.
  • Irrigation Technicians, IV: Requires 5+ years ofrelated experience.
