Job description

Under general supervision of a Parks Superintendent or Parks Supervisor, the Parks Crew Leader oversees assigned staff and participates in maintaining City parks, land, recreation areas, landscaping, forestry, natural areas, medians, and right of ways. Operates and instructs in the use of various light and heavy equipment, landscape machinery, hand, and power tools.

This position description provides a summary of major duties and responsibilities. Incumbents may not perform all duties listed and may be assigned other related tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Oversees and participates in maintenance of parks, land, recreation areas, landscaping, forestry, natural areas, medians, and rights of way.
2. Issues work orders, assigns tasks, and manages equipment, tools, and supplies for work projects.
3. Maintains accurate records within the City’s asset management system.
4. Inspects and oversees maintenance and repairs of vehicles, equipment, and tools.
5. Supervises staff to ensure safety and prevent damage.
6. Coordinates inspections of park facilities and safety checks.
7. Mows grass, trims trees, weeds, and applies pesticides/herbicides.
8. Cleans work sites and restores landscaping after maintenance.
9. Maintains inventory and orders necessary supplies and parts.
10. Trains new employees on equipment operation.
11. Operates grounds maintenance equipment.

Other Important Duties

• Stays informed on turf management and equipment trends.
• Travels to job sites, meetings, and training sessions.
• Supports other departments as needed.
• Performs additional related duties.
• Maintains consistent attendance during scheduled hours.

Specialized Job Functions: Irrigation

• Programs and manages irrigation systems for water efficiency.
• Designs and oversees installation and repair of sprinkler systems.
• Determines water needs based on soil and plant types.
• Reviews design plans for irrigation systems.
• Inspects work performed by others on irrigation systems.
• Must hold a current Texas Irrigation License.
• Knowledge of water conservation, hydraulics, and irrigation design.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. plus two years of parks maintenance experience, or equivalent.
• Must pass pre-employment drug test, physical, background, and MVR checks.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License required; Class B CDL may be required depending on assignment.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Primarily outdoor work with exposure to weather, chemicals, plants/animals, fumes, and pathogens. Physical activities include balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Equipment and Tools

Operates city equipment including mowers, tractors, skid-steer, trencher, and standard office equipment.
