Position Summary

Ironworkers are responsible for the layout, installation, assembly, and steel erection components in accordance with blueprint plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

1. Read specifications or blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, or sizes of material required.
2. Fabricate metal parts, such as steel frames, columns, beams, or girders, according to blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
3. Unload and position prefabricated steel units for hoisting; hoist steel beams, girders, or columns into place, using cranes or signaling hoisting equipment operators.
4. Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel members, using plumb bobs, laser equipment, transits, or levels.
5. Cut, bend, or weld steel pieces, using metal shears, torches, or welding equipment.
6. Force structural steel members into final positions, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, or hand tools.
7. Pull, push, or pries structural steel members into approximate positions for bolting into place.
8. Bolt aligned structural-steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding into place.
9. Assemble hoisting equipment or riggings, such as cables, pulleys, or hooks, to move heavy equipment or materials.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with previous experience in the field or related area.
• Working knowledge of skills and abilities for the position.
• Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; effective communication with management/supervision.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and layout tools safely and efficiently.

Requirements

• Constant movement about a construction/industrial site; ability to stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
• Work in a construction environment exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
• Work irregular hours, including weekends, overtime, and holidays.
• Use ladders, mechanical platforms, manlifts, scaffolds to access equipment and work areas, and climb and maintain balance on formwork, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
• Move and work around confined, cluttered, and uneven surfaces.
• Complete tasks in noisy and dusty environments.
• Move items weighing up to 50 pounds across construction sites.
• Possess required tools; may require a US driver's license.
• Observe safety and project rules; perform other duties as required.
• Pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing, medical, and background checks.
