Position Summary

Ironworkers are responsible for the layout, installation, assembly, and steel erection components in accordance with blueprint plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Read specifications or blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, or sizes of material required.
2. Fabricate metal parts, such as steel frames, columns, beams, or girders, according to blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
3. Unload and position prefabricated steel units for hoisting; hoist steel beams, girders, or columns into place, using cranes or signaling hoisting equipment operators.
4. Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel members, using plumb bobs, laser equipment, transits, or levels.
5. Cut, bend, or weld steel pieces, using metal shears, torches, or welding equipment.
6. Force structural steel members into final positions, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, or hand tools.
7. Pull, push, or pries structural steel members into approximate positions for bolting into place.
8. Bolt aligned structural steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding into place.
9. Assemble hoisting equipment or riggings, such as cables, pulleys, or hooks, to move heavy equipment or materials.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent with relevant experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of tools and safety procedures.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and layout tools safely and efficiently.

Requirements:

• Ability to move constantly within a construction/industrial site, including standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
• Work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
• Work irregular hours, including weekends, overtime, and holidays as required.
• Use ladders, scaffolds, and mechanical platforms; climb and maintain balance.
• Work in confined, cluttered, or uneven spaces.
• Complete tasks in noisy and dusty environments.
• Move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Possess required tools and possibly a US driver’s license.
• Adhere to safety and project rules; pass drug, medical, and background checks.
