Brown & Root Industrial Services in Texas is seeking a supervisor to lead crews in raising, placing and uniting structural steel, reading drawings, directing tasks, ensuring safety and efficiency.

The role requires ability to coordinate hoisting, rigging, alignment, welding, and material handling on site, with a focus on quality and timely project completion.

Qualifications

• Experience directing a crew on structural steel tasks.
• Ability to read steel drawings and derive location and orientation.
• Knowledge of rigging and hoisting safety practices.
• Ability to use measuring tools and apply shop mathematics.
• Strong problem-solving and communication on job sites.

Responsibilities

• Plan and direct crew work and timelines on completion of tasks assigned.
• Sets up hoisting equipment, raising and placing structural steel members.
• Fastens steel members to hoist cables using chains, cables or ropes.
• Signals hoist operator to lift and place steel members.
• Guides members with tag lines to position them correctly.
• Pulls, pushes or pries steel members into position and tightens with tools.
• Aligns bolt holes using drift pins or spud wrenches and verifies with plumb bob and level.
• Cuts and welds steel members as needed on site.
• Loads, transports and unloads materials, tools and equipment.
• Performs maintenance or cleaning of tools and equipment and observes safety rules.

Job description

SUMMARY

Directs a crew(s) in raising, placing and uniting girders, columns and other structural steel members to form completed structures or structure framework. Should be familiar with steel drawings being able to derive location, orientation and other necessary practices to direct a crew in completing job tasks in a timely, safe and efficient manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• - Plan and direct a crew(s) work and timelines on completion of tasks assigned.
• - Sets up hoisting equipment, raising and placing structural
• - steel members, with basic rigging knowledge for raising an placing structural steel members.
• - Fastens steel members to cable of hoist, using chain, cable or rope.
• - Signals worker operating hoisting equipment to lift and place steel members.
• - Guides member, using tag line in order to guide it into position.
• - Pulls, pushes or pries steel members into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting device. - Forces members into final position, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks and hand tools.
• - Aligns bolt holes in steel member using drift pins or spud wrenches.
• - Verifies vertical and horizontal alignment of members using plumb bob and level. Bolts align members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place.
• - Cuts and welds steel members to make alterations using oxyacetylene welding equipment and supplies.
• - Loads, transports, unloads material, tools, equipment and supplies.
• - May assist in lifting, positions and securing of materials and work pieces during installation.
• - Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
• - Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Should be able to make independent and informed decisions involving the completion of tasks assigned. Typically reports to a site manager.
