Job summary

Ingersoll Rand is seeking an IoT Field Engineer to support EcoPlant deployments. You will lead on-site installations, deploy field instrumentation and edge devices, and ensure reliable data flow to the EcoPlant platform.

Role requires strong technical aptitude, field experience, and adherence to safety practices. Extensive travel across North America is expected with remote work allowed from the continental US.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Own on-site installation of EcoPlant deployments from start to finish.
  • Install instrumentation and sensors; terminate and land wiring per drawings.
  • Deploy edge hardware, provision power, and optimize signal quality.
  • Configure network settings and verify device connectivity to the platform.
  • Maintain accurate site records, redlines, and photographs for diagrams.
  • Adhere to safety standards including LOTO and PPE requirements.

Job Overview:

There's a sustainability movement underway in manufacturing that leverages control systems to proactively monitor mission-critical equipment, evaluating and improving efficiency while predicting and preventing downtime and equipment failures. If you're looking to be at the leading edge of that progress, we're seeking a technically skilled and self-driven IoT Field Engineer to join our growing EcoPlant deployment team.

Responsibilities
  • Own the On-Site Installation: Take ownership of each EcoPlant installation, delivering high-quality workmanship that performs reliably in demanding industrial environments. You will frequently work independently as the on-site EcoPlant representative.
  • Install Instrumentation and Sensors: Install the field instrumentation that feeds data to the EcoPlant platform, including air sensors and power monitoring equipment. Terminate and land wiring to its respective locations in accordance with provided documents for Ethernet, Modbus, discrete I/O, etc., while maintaining clean connections and reliable signal integrity.
  • Deploy Edge Hardware: Mount and install edge devices, provision power, and position cellular antennas for optimal signal quality,
  • Commission and Verify Connectivity: Configure network settings, confirm each device is communicating as expected, validate that data is flowing into the platform, and coordinate with technical support to resolve any connectivity issues prior to site departure.
  • Maintain Documentation: Produce accurate records, redlines, and photographs to support the development and maintenance of each site’s P&ID and system diagram.
  • Adhere to Safety Standards: Follow site and standard electrical safety practices, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) and appropriate PPE, when working around energized equipment and pressurized compressed air systems.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma and/or combination of education
  • 2+ years’ related industrial controls installation experience required.
  • 2+ years’ experience deploying IoT and/or edge hardware in industrial environments.
Core Competencies
  • Demonstrated mechanical and technical aptitude, with the ability to work hands-on and reason through how systems integrate. Relevant experience may come from field service, a technical degree, and/or substantial hands-on technical experience.
  • Familiarity with computers and networking fundamentals, including configuring network interfaces (i.e. understanding of how IP addressing/subnetting works), and basic Linux/ Windows command-line navigation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of IoT communication protocols (such as Modbus, CANbus, Profibus, and discrete I/O), networking, and data security.
  • Ability to read and work from schematics, P&IDs, and wiring diagrams, including terminating and landing wiring to terminals per drawings.
  • Understanding of network communications and protocols, switches, routers, and mobile equipment.
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience and comfort working with low-voltage control wiring.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and resolve issues independently in the field.
  • Exceptional customer service skills coupled with the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams to achieve a shared mission.
  • Proven ability to work independently — self-driven, organized, and able to manage an installation from start to finish with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license for a minimum of 12 months, with no major or frequent traffic violations including, but not limited to: DUI in the previous 5 years, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless/Careless Driving or multiple smaller infractions or preventable collisions in the previous 3 years.
  • Physical demands: This position requires working in diverse conditions including but not limited to mechanical equipment rooms with exposure to noisy operating equipment, exposure to extreme weather conditions, precarious places, heights, and risk of electrical shock (high voltage). This position is highly physical and requires regular use of hands, fingers, walking, stooping, and kneeling. It requires employees to regularly lift and or move weight limits in line with the safety policy.
Preferences
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field, such as Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • Experience with industrial compressed air systems.
  • A genuine interest in developing technically within the industrial automation and IoT space.
Travel & Work Arrangements/Requirements
  • This position is eligible for remote work in the continental United States.
  • Interested candidates should have access to a major airport for travel.
  • Extensive travel across North America required (up to 75%)
Pay Range

The total pay range for this role is $85,000 - $135,000. The actual pay range takes into account a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skills; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed pay range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Ingersoll Rand, it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at or near the top of the pay range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
