Investment Management Recruitment Consultant at Selby Jennings

We are a Chicago-based growth equity and venture capital firm focused exclusively on partnering with innovative, technology-driven companies. Our investment philosophy is rooted in identifying strong founding teams, scalable business models, and industries undergoing rapid transformation. With a hands-on, collaborative approach, we aim to support companies not just with capital, but with strategic guidance across hiring, go-to-market, product development, and long-term growth planning.

Our portfolio includes early- to growth-stage technology companies spanning vertical SaaS, fintech, healthtech, AI/ML, and other B2B software and infrastructure segments. We invest with conviction, often leading or co-leading rounds, and take an active role in helping our companies scale sustainably.

Position Overview

As an Investment Associate, you'll be a critical part of the investment team, working closely with Partners and Principals across all aspects of the investment lifecycle. This includes sourcing new opportunities, evaluating companies, conducting due diligence, supporting portfolio companies, and helping shape firm strategy.

We're looking for intellectually curious, analytically rigorous, and entrepreneurially minded individuals who thrive in fast-paced environments and are passionate about technology, business models, and startup ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

Deal Sourcing & Market Mapping

  • Proactively identify and reach out to high-potential startups and founders.
  • Build theses around sectors of interest and track emerging trends.
  • Develop and maintain a pipeline of qualified investment opportunities.
  • Analyze company financials, unit economics, KPIs, and market dynamics.
  • Participate in founder meetings and pitch sessions.
  • Support due diligence processes, including competitive analysis, customer calls, financial modeling, and reference checks.
  • Help portfolio companies with strategic initiatives (e.g., product roadmap input, hiring plans, fundraising strategy, KPI tracking).
  • Prepare materials for board meetings, internal updates, and reporting.

Internal Initiatives

  • Contribute to fund strategy, investment memos, LP communications, and CRM management.
  • Support broader efforts around brand, events, thought leadership, and ecosystem development.
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in one or more of the following: investment banking, consulting, growth equity, venture capital, or at a high-growth tech startup (especially in a finance, ops, or strategy role).
  • Deep interest in technology, software, and emerging business models.
  • Strong financial modeling, analytical, and Excel skills; ability to evaluate businesses quickly and thoroughly.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Self-starter mentality—proactive, resourceful, and comfortable operating independently in a flat team structure.
  • Chicago-based (or willing to relocate); flexible hybrid schedule.
Why Join Us
  • Exposure: Work directly with senior investors and founders across high-growth companies and transformative markets.
  • Growth: Learn the art and science of early-stage and growth-stage investing, with mentorship and long-term career development opportunities.
  • Impact: Play an active role in shaping the next generation of technology companies, while contributing to firm-wide strategy and evolution.
  • Culture: We're a small, tight-knit team that values intellectual honesty, hustle, curiosity, and collaboration.
