Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family conduct investigations related to suspected violations of federal, state, or local laws to prevent or solve crimes. The position mental and physical stamina and strength to work in all environmental and meteorological conditions.

Typical Functions

• Investigates pertinent criminal and/or regulatory violations, all defenses and/or the background of a client and relevant individuals as directed
• Conducts interviews with and interrogates witnesses, suspects, family members, and other appropriate individuals to obtain facts and evidence from the scene
• Collects and preserves evidence, maintains related records, and chain of custody
• Analyzes and evaluates collected evidence and information and prepares a written report
• Prepares investigative prosecutorial reports and drafts and executes legal documents as requested
• Appears as a witness in court proceedings to testify to the findings of the investigation
• Assists grand juries by serving subpoenas and assembling witnesses
• Provides law enforcement assistance to other local, state, and federal agencies when requested
• Maintains a working, professional relationship as best as possible with the client, potential witnesses, and the client's family
• Establishes and maintains cooperative communication with internal staff, law enforcement personnel, witnesses, and others involved with the case
• Supervise lower-level investigative staff

Education And Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor's degree plus two (2) years of experience, or a combination of education and experience.
