Job summary

The University of South Carolina is hiring an Investigator for the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX to support a centralized civil rights function. You will assess and investigate allegations ensuring compliance with laws and university policies while upholding fairness and thoroughness.

Reporting to the Director of Investigations and Resolutions, the investigator conducts independent inquiries, maintains confidentiality, and communicates findings with clarity to stakeholders across campus.

Qualifications

  • Investigations involving discrimination, harassment and Title IX.
  • Ability to conduct thorough, impartial investigations independently.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and investigate allegations of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct.
  • Promote compliance with civil rights laws including Title IX, Title VI, and VII.
  • Work independently, adhere to policies, and prepare impartial investigation reports.

In partnership with and reporting to the Director of Investigations and Resolutions, the Civil Rights and Title IX Investigator provides support to the university by enacting the university policies against discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct as well as helping ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws. The Investigator's primary responsibilities will be to assess and investigate allegations pertaining to discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct, which promotes expectations consistent with civil rights laws such as Title IX, Title VI, and Title VII. The Investigator will be expected to work independently, adhere to policies and procedures, and conduct thorough and impartial investigations.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Handles difficult and sensitive employee situations with refined judgment while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to data privacy laws and policies.
  • Effectively manages multiple ongoing cases and a complex caseload while preparing concise, organized, logical, and analytical reports that clearly convey complex issues.
  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal, and collaborative communication skills when working with staff, faculty, and students across academic and administrative departments and offices.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Maxient case management system.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer JD.
  • Experience conducting investigations alleging discrimination.
  • Experience with or knowledge of trauma-informed investigation practices.
  • Experience working in higher education.
