Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a Graphics Multimedia Editor, Open-source Reporting, in New York, NY. You will lead visual reconstructions and investigations that rely on spatial analysis or 3-D modeling, gathering and analyzing evidence across topics for quick-turn and enterprise stories.

You will drive major storylines, work solo or across desks, and report to an Assistant Editor on the Graphics desk, in an in-office role four days a week in New York.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant experience as an investigative reporter, open-source researcher or forensic expert.
• Proven experience conducting open-source investigations by sourcing audio and visual evidence across platforms.
• Experience producing accountability journalism with a strong portfolio.
• Experience producing clear copy about visual evidence under tight deadlines.
• Experience verifying user-generated content from social media for authenticity.

Responsibilities

• Bring OSINT fluency to the desk's coverage: geolocation, chronolocation, satellite imagery analysis, audio-video research, and more.
• Analyze data sources including satellite imagery, flight/vessel tracking data, social media and scanner data.
• Vet and build relationships with a network of sources on stories.
• Develop tools to automate open-source reporting for analyzing and visualizing evidence.
• Explore advanced techniques, including machine learning, computer vision and AI tools.
• Support the value of journalistic independence and our mission to seek the truth.
