Job Summary: Inventory Controller & Material Handler, Houston TX
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Inventory Controller to oversee raw material staging, lot traceability, and inventory accuracy across our bellows and expansion joint manufacturing operations. In this role, you will be responsible for physical material handling as well as digital inventory control - managing stock levels, issuing materials to job routings, receiving raw metals and hardware, and maintaining 100% heat-number/lot traceability in our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience safely operating material handling equipment (forklifts, overhead cranes, sheet lifters) alongside strong administrative discipline in cycle counting, scrap tracking, and material certifications (MTRs).
Responsibilities
Inventory Control & Traceability- Lot & Heat Number Control: Verify, record, and maintain strict material traceability (heat numbers, melt numbers, and Mill Test Reports/MTRs) for raw sheet, coil, seamless tubing, forgings, and welding wire from receipt through fabrication.
- Cycle Counting & Audits: Plan and execute perpetual cycle counts; reconcile physical inventory with ERP records, identify root causes of variances, and implement corrective actions.
- ERP Maintenance: Execute real-time transactions in the ERP system—including purchase order receipts, material allocations to work orders (travelers), location transfers, and scrap/drop logging.
- WIP & Off-Cut Management: Track Work-in-Progress (WIP) and manage drop/off-cut sheet (e.g., standard stainless steels, nickel alloys like Inconel and Hastelloy), ensuring drops are properly labeled and re-entered into inventory.
Material Handling & Logistics- Safe Material Movement: Safely offload, transport, and store sheet metal coils, tubing, raw plates, flanges, and formed bellows convolutions using sit-down forklifts, narrow-aisle trucks, pallet jacks, and overhead bridge cranes.
- Receiving & Receiving Inspection Support: Inspect incoming shipments for physical transit damage, count accuracy, and tagging; coordinate with the Quality Assurance team to hold nonconforming or unverified material in quarantine.
- Kitting & Staging: Review production schedules and job travelers to kit components, weld consumables, and hardware; stage materials at specific work centers (forming, metal cutting, welding, assembly) to prevent machine downtime.
- Warehouse Organization: Maintain 5S standards across raw material racks, consumable cribs, and finished goods storage to ensure clean, safe, and efficient flow.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 3+ years of inventory control, warehouse, or material handling experience in a manufacturing environment (custom metal fabrication, precision machining, or welding/forming preferred).
- Equipment Certification: Active certification or proven competency to safely operate forklifts (sit-down/stand-up) and overhead bridge/jib cranes with lifting rigging.
- ERP / WMS Proficiency: Demonstrated experience working with manufacturing ERP/MRP systems (e.g., JobBOSS, ProShop, Epicor, Fulcrum, NetSuite) for inventory receipts, cycle adjustments, and job allocations.
- Quality Systems Literacy: Familiarity with strict traceability requirements in regulated manufacturing environments (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100, ASME, or PED).
- Physical Capabilities: Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs unassisted on a regular basis in a shop environment.
Required Qualifications:
- Prior experience handling thin-gauge alloys (0.002\"-0.125\" stainless steel, Inconel 625/718, Monel, Hastelloy) and understanding the material handling required for bellows.
- Lean Manufacturing or 5S implementation experience on the shop floor.
- High school diploma or GED; technical certification in inventory management (e.g., APICS CPIM/CLTD) is a plus.
Key Competencies
- Meticulous Attention to Detail: Zero tolerance for mixed heats, untagged alloy drops, or undocumented material movements.
- Safety First Mindset: Proactive adherence to OSHA standards, rigging best practices, and PPE compliance.
- Collaborative Communication: Works seamlessly with Quality Inspectors, Welders, Machine Operators, Purchasing, and Production Planners.
