Job summary

MICA Steelworks in Texas is seeking an Inventory Control Specialist I to manage real-time transactions and material flow in a GSS ERP environment. You will supervise a team of material handlers, coordinate movements to fit production schedules, and contribute to inventory strategy and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
  • Prior production and inventory experience required; inventory accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel; PowerPoint and Access a plus).
  • ERP system experience required; Global Shop Solutions (GSS) experience strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform real-time inventory transactions in the GSS ERP system including receipts, issues, transfers, consumption, and adjustments.
  • Verify and record materials against purchase orders; label, organize, and record in GSS.
  • Research, correct, and document inventory discrepancies to maintain system integrity.
  • Receive and verify raw and outsourced materials against documents; coordinate material issuance.
  • Provide daily directions to material handlers and support staging, transfers, and movements.
  • Support cycle counting, physical inventory, and documentation for traceability and compliance.
  • Analyze inventory data to identify shortages, excess inventory, and process inefficiencies; propose improvements.
  • Collaborate with Production, Purchasing, Accounting, Quality Control, and Project teams to align inventory with demand.

Job Summary The Inventory Control Specialist I is responsible for ensuring accurate, real-time inventory transactions and material flow using the GSS ERP system in a steel manufacturing environment. This role supports production readiness by managing receipts, material issuance, transfers, and inventory controls while contributing to inventory strategy, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives. The position also provides daily direction to a team of material handlers, coordinating material movements to align with production schedules and priorities. The role offers hands-on operational exposure with opportunities for professional growth.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
  • Prior production and inventory experience required; inventory accounting experience strongly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES

ERP & Inventory Operations (GSS)

  • Perform all inventory transactions in real time within the GSS ERP system, including receipts, issues, transfers, consumption, and adjustments.
  • Ensure materials received against purchase orders are accurately verified, labeled, organized, and recorded in GSS.
  • Research, correct, and document inventory discrepancies to maintain system integrity.

Receiving, Issuing & Production Support

  • Receive and verify raw materials and outsourced materials against bills of lading, invoices, purchase orders, and system records.
  • Coordinate material issuance and consumption in alignment with production schedules and shop demands.
  • Provide daily work directions to material handlers regarding staging, movement, and issuance of materials.
  • Support staging, internal transfers, and material movement to maintain efficient production flow.
  • Work closely with production teams to ensure materials are transacted immediately upon release for consumption.

Inventory Control, Accuracy & Compliance

  • Execute and support cycle counting and physical inventory programs, including reconciliation and reporting.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of receipts, transfers, returns, and consumption activities.
  • Label, organize, and control raw materials to support traceability, quality, and compliance requirements.

Analysis, Reporting & Strategy

  • Analyze inventory data to identify shortages, excess inventory, and process inefficiencies.
  • Provide recommendations for process improvements to strengthen inventory accuracy and operational efficiency.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner with Production, Purchasing, Accounting, Quality Control, Project Demand Planning, Project Management, and management to align inventory availability with operational needs.
  • Coordinate daily material movement priorities with material handlers to support changing production schedules.
  • Assist with training initiatives related to ERP usage, inventory procedures, and best practices.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and informal leadership to material handlers and others involved in inventory activities, as needed.
  • Ability to perform other tasks and/or projects assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position generally works in an office but is expected to become familiar with production operations and to independently visit company locations (3) within DFW, as directed or needed. This job has minimal physical exertion, but the incumbent must be able to sit, stand, and walk. When visiting the plants for observation, the position may require occasional squatting, bending, kneeling, reaching, twisting, crawling, walking on rough ground, exposure to change in temperature or humidity, being near moving equipment, and/or working from heights. The incumbent must be able to occasionally lift/carry and push/pull up to 25 lbs.

Continuing Education Requirements

Employees are expected to participate in appropriate continuing education as may be requested and/or required by their immediate supervisor. In addition, employees are expected to accept personal responsibility for other educational activities to enhance job-related skills and abilities. Employees must attend mandatory education programs. During the new hire orientation all new hires will be provided with New Hire Orientation (NEO) training which includes human resources information and safety training. The safety training component will be an annual requirement for all employees to participate, review and pass the required safety exams.
