Job summary

UCI is seeking an Interventional Radiology Procedural Specialist to provide technical support for a urology-focused IR program, initially concentrating on Prostate Artery Embolization and future IR procedures. POSITIONSUMMARY

The Interventional Radiology (IR) Procedural Specialist provides technical and procedural support for a urology-focused Interventional Radiology program, with an initial emphasis on Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) and future interventional procedures as the program develops.

This position may be filled by a qualified Radiologic Technologist or Surgical Technologist with the appropriate education, certification, experience, and competencies for the responsibilities assigned.

The IR Procedural Specialist works directly with the Interventional Radiologist and procedural team, scrubbing into cases and assisting with instrumentation, supplies, devices, sterile technique, and procedural workflow. The individual will also be trained and competency-validated in the safe operation and positioning of the C-arm and associated imaging equipment to the extent permitted by applicable licensure, certification, facility policy, and state regulations.

Additional duties and cross-training will be assigned based on the employee's professional background, licensure, certification, demonstrated competency, scope of practice, and organizational needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• 1. Scrub and directly assist the Interventional Radiologist during PAE and other assigned interventional procedures.
• 2. Prepare sterile procedural fields, instruments, wires, catheters, sheaths, embolization supplies, contrast-related supplies, and other equipment required for procedures.
• 3. Anticipate physician needs and maintain an efficient procedural workflow.
• 4. Assist with preparation, handling, and exchange of guidewires, catheters, devices, and other procedural equipment within scope and competency.
• 5. Maintain strict sterile technique throughout procedures.
• 6. Assist with procedural setup, room turnover, stocking, and equipment readiness.
• 7. Participate in procedural time-outs and required patient-safety processes.
• 8. Maintain knowledge of supplies and equipment used for PAE and other IR procedures.
• 9. Assist with inventory management and ensure necessary specialty supplies are available for scheduled cases.
• 10. Complete required training and competency validation related to the C-arm and imaging equipment utilized for IR procedures.
• 11. Assist with positioning and maneuvering the C-arm during procedures and support the Interventional Radiologist in obtaining required procedural imaging.
• 12. Follow radiation-safety principles and required protective measures and maintain applicable imaging-equipment and radiation-safety competencies.
• 13. Perform imaging-related functions only as permitted by the individual's licensure, certification, competency, facility policy, and applicable regulations.
• 14. Assist in developing efficient workflows for the urologic Interventional Radiology program, including procedural preference cards, supply lists, setup standards, and equipment processes.
• 15. Participate in quality-improvement and patient-safety initiatives and collaborate with the Interventional Radiologist, nursing staff, scheduling teams, and operational leadership.
• 16. Support growth of the program as additional urologic IR procedures are introduced.
• 17. Cross-train and provide coverage in other surgical, procedural, imaging, or clinical areas based on professional background, organizational need, licensure, certification, training, competency, and scope of practice.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

• Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program with applicable registration/licensure, or graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program with applicable certification.
• Current BLS certification.

• Ability and willingness to complete training specific to PAE and other interventional procedures.
• Ability and willingness to complete required C-arm, radiation-safety, and imaging-equipment training as applicable to the individual's role.
• Ability to meet facility-specific competency and credentialing requirements.
• Previous Interventional Radiology, vascular, cardiac catheterization, operating room, or procedural experience.
• Experience assisting with endovascular procedures.
• Experience with C-arm or fluoroscopic imaging equipment.
• Experience with wires, catheters, sheaths, vascular access equipment, and embolization procedures.
• Urology experience.
• Strong sterile technique and procedural awareness.
• Ability to learn specialized IR equipment and techniques.
• Ability to anticipate physician needs during complex procedures.
• Strong understanding of procedural patient safety and radiation safety.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to respond appropriately during procedural emergencies.
• Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a small procedural team.
• Flexibility to cross-train and support additional departments as appropriate.
