Job summary

Samuel Merritt University is seeking an Interprofessional Simulation Educator to support simulation-based learning on the Oakland campus. Job Description Summary

The Interprofessional (IPE) Simulation Educator (SE) reports directly to the Executive Director of the Health Sciences Simulation Center. The SE supports interprofessional simulation‑based learning (SBL) and all other immersive learning modalities on the Oakland campus.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure best practices in the design and implementation of interprofessional learning and IPE SBL.
  • Serve as an accessible, expert resource and support person for SMU faculty integrating IPE SBL strategies into their curricula.
  • Collaborate across all health science and nursing programs to develop in‑person, virtual, and hybrid interprofessional learning opportunities (simulation, immersive technologies, or other modalities).
  • Provide focused support to faculty from specific academic programs or external entities as assigned.
  • Lead the collaborative design of interprofessional learning simulations and other curricular activities.
  • Facilitate the implementation of interprofessional simulation scenarios for learners, including prebriefing and debriefing.
  • Provide cross‑coverage support for SBL activities across SMU campuses, ensuring continuity of support, especially in nursing.
  • Effectively utilize TeamSTEPPS™ tools and strategies to enhance team performance and communication.
  • Engage in community outreach by participating in or leading educational sessions within the HSSC for community and youth groups.
Education Responsibilities
  • Observe SMU faculty leading an IPE SBL activity to ensure evidence‑based standards are met.
  • Act as a mentor/coach to faculty during an IPE SBL activity, providing feedback and improvement suggestions.
  • Lead and assist with TeamSTEPPS SMU training sessions.
  • Mentor faculty in the simulation‑enhanced interprofessional healthcare simulation standards of best practices to promote reflective learning.
  • Collaborate with the Simulation Technology Specialist (STS) to coordinate necessary technical support and session setup.
  • Utilize the Educational Management Solutions (EMS) AV and database management systems effectively.
  • Design, develop, implement, and evaluate new interprofessional learning events using evidence‑based methods and SBL theories.
  • Identify and map IPEC competencies in each interprofessional learning activity.
  • Facilitate university‑wide IPE activities and initiatives with SMU faculty across programs.
  • Develop and/or utilize assessment tools to evaluate learner competency.
  • Maintain the library of interprofessional scenarios and learning activities under your oversight.
  • Serve on the SMU IPE Steering Committee, designing and evaluating university‑wide IPE opportunities.
  • Lead and collaborate on faculty development with a focus on IPE SBL and immersive learning approaches.
  • Collaborate with the HSSC and SMU faculty to develop, implement, evaluate, and study faculty development activities in IPE SBL.
  • Continuously engage in quality improvement of HSSC services through faculty meetings, reviews of curricular documents, and brainstorming sessions.
Research and Development Responsibilities
  • Advocate for an innovative approach to all HSSC services and products, constantly exploring new methods and improvements.
  • Maintain awareness of trends in teaching and learning, focusing on simulation and immersive modalities.
  • Analyze academic and vendor literature to inform HSSC decisions regarding services and products.
  • Engage in scholarly work in accordance with SMU guidelines and IRB policies for human subjects research.
  • Collaborate with HSSC team colleagues and SMU faculty to conduct research, ensuring ethical and legal compliance.
  • Represent the HSSC in disseminating research findings at conferences and through publications.
  • Negotiate faculty workload hours for individual scholarly endeavors with the HSSC Executive Director.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in health profession (health science or nursing), education, or simulation specialties.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in simulation‑based teaching and learning.
  • Expertise in healthcare simulation across a variety of health professional programs.
  • TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer certificate preferred.
  • Experience leading simulation for pre‑licensure nursing programs preferred.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes in priorities, project needs, and workflow.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, equipment, and software relevant to simulator functions preferred.
Work Environment
  • This is an onsite position based in Oakland, CA, requiring regular in‑office presence to support daily operations, collaboration, and student or team engagement.
  • Work is performed primarily on campus in a dynamic academic environment with direct interaction across multidisciplinary teams.
Employee Status

Regular, United States of America (Exempt), Full time.

Pay Range

Based on experience up to $130,000 annual, exempt.
