Description

Coordinate and schedule sign language interpreting services/captioning services for students/staff who are deaf/hard of hearing. Recruit, hire and serve as the primary contact for contract sign language interpreters; act as liaison to monitor and ensure college accessibility compliance for all college courses and campus activities for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH). May provide back-up interpreter services to student for coverage purposes.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position description should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the major responsibilities and requirements of the job. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated on this description.
1. Create and maintain a master interpreter schedule and coordinate all related activities to ensure the schedule is covered and in compliance with all local, state, federal and campus-wide regulations and policies, and advocate for student rights within the role.
2. Provide visibility at community events to recruit interpreters. Develop and maintain a partnership with the local Interpreter Training Program (ITP) with the goal that they will want to work at WCTC as interpreters.
3. Present workshops and provide resources for instructors. Develop communications to create awareness of D/HH students, support services being used, and appropriate etiquette for interactions in their classes.
4. Coordinate, inform, monitor and evaluate all activities related to the captioning process.
5. Develop, review and maintain Policy/Procedure Handbook for Contract Interpreters.
6. Actively participate in awareness events and brainstorm ideas for planning events on campus.
7. Actively participate on committees to support and bring awareness to the Student Accessibility Office Mission/Vision statement in providing an accessible learning environment for students/staff.
8. Work with the Coordinator of Student Accessibility to project costs used for future budget purposes.
9. Provide limited classroom/college event interpreting services as well as interpret specialty meetings with other departments for students and staff.
10. To keep current, participate in professional development opportunities such as participation in the Sign Language Interpreting Community as well as in the Deaf Community, staying abreast of local, state, and federal laws and attendance at state-called meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and proficiency in speaking and writing English. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of the D/HH community, programs and services and proficiency in American Sign Language for the Deaf.
  • Knowledge of related laws and the use of auxiliary aids.
  • Organization, decision-making and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to foster and maintain relationships, and work effectively with individuals with diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to analyze the impact of personal actions on students and colleagues.
  • Ability to assess the work of others.
  • Familiarity with basic accounting and budgeting processes.
  • Familiarity with the college setting.

  • EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Renewable state and federal licensure.

    The Interpreter Specialist is part of the Student Accessibility department and will report to the Director of Student Accessibility. This position will start August 1, 2025.

    This is a 40-hour/week, non-exempt, benefit-eligible position. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional evenings and weekends.Salary
