Job Description

Portuguese or Spanish Interpreter – District-wide position to facilitate communication between Framingham Public Schools parents/guardians and school staff through interpreting services. This is a non-bargaining, non-benefit position based on the interpreting needs of FPS and upon request.

Position Summary: Facilitate communication between Framingham Public Schools parents/guardians and school staff through interpreting services. This includes bridging language and cultural barriers in order to protect educational rights of families and children.

Qualifications: Native proficiency in Portuguese or Spanish, proficiency in English, strong verbal communication skills, preferred experience in educational setting.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Interpret as needed for school meetings and events district-wide.
• Serve as the bridge between Portuguese or Spanish speaking parents/guardians and FPS staff.
• Interpret from English into Portuguese or Spanish and from Portuguese or Spanish into English.
• Provide linguistic and cultural assistance to parents/guardians and FPS staff as needed and appropriate.

Physical Working Conditions

The employee is regularly required to move around the school building, may remain in a stationary position for periods, reach with hands and arms, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must lift at least 20 lbs. Must use hands to grasp tools, operate computer and other office equipment. Works in a normal school environment with acceptable noise level.

Reports To

Manager of Translation and Interpreting Services.

Terms of Employment

Covered under the Framingham School Committee. This is a non-bargaining, non-benefit position based on the interpreting needs of FPS and upon request. Interpreting rate: $28.49 per hour.

Evaluation

Performance evaluated by the Manager of Translation and Interpreting Services, FPS staff at different schools/departments, and the Bilingual Office.

Job Requirements

Required qualifications include native proficiency in Portuguese or Spanish, proficiency in English, strong verbal communication skills, preferred educational setting experience, and the ability to perform essential duties and responsibilities outlined above.
