Job summary

California State University, Northridge (CSUN) seeks qualified sign language interpreters for an on-call Hourly Interpreter pool. Positions require interpreting in academic classes, department and university meetings, and platform events with deaf/hard-of-hearing participants. Training and mentoring other interpreters may be involved.

Positions are temporary-renewable and on-call, with hours varying. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and meet CSU background-check

Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Interpreter interprets in academic classes representing various levels requiring significant and rapid interaction using highly technical or specialized subject matter, concepts, theory, and vocabulary. Services may also involve advanced and/or complex topics requiring significant sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpretation in meetings, discussions, seminars, and conferences.

• Interpreting in a variety of department, college, and university-level meetings that are critical to the life and development of the department; services may involve advanced and/or complex topics requiring significant sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpretation
• Interpreting in more complex situations such as conferences, workshops, seminars, theatrical, and/or other platform settings where multiple consumers, including students, faculty, and staff, are served simultaneously.
• Other duties may include mentoring other interpreters and providing training at employee in-service programs.
• Any combination of formal training and relevant documented interpreting experience that demonstrates assurance of the skills appropriate for the level of the assignment. Such combination of experience and training should be equivalent to those prescribed in one of the following required certifications: RID (CI or CT), NAD (Levels 4-5 only), and NIC (Certified, Advanced, or Master).
• Wide acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at or graduation from a four-year college or university is preferred.
• Two years of relevant documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings is desired.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of American Sign Language, English sign systems, Deaf Culture, and interpreting methods used to support deaf and hard-of-hearing consumers in academic, meeting, and platform settings.
• Ability to provide accurate sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpretation in advanced academic courses, department meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, theatrical events, and other complex environments involving technical or specialized subject matter.
• Skill in interpreting rapidly changing discussions, concepts, theories, and vocabulary while serving multiple consumers, including students, faculty, staff, and deaf/hard-of-hearing professionals.
• Ability to support interpreter development through mentoring, peer guidance, and training at employee in-service programs while applying professional standards and appropriate communication practices.

• The anticipated HIRING RANGE is $19.37 – $64.00 per hour, dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $19.37 - $194.60 per hour.
• HOURS: Intermittent, on-call; hours and schedule vary.
• This is a Temporary-renewable position; end date to be determined.

General Information

• Applications are currently being accepted to establish an Hourly Interpreter POOL. Applications for these on-call positions will be accepted on a continuing basis through June 30, 2027, or until an adequate number of applications have been received.
• This position is sensitive as designated by the CSU.
• A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or the continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
• The person holding this position may be considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements outlined in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
