Job summary

ESC of Northeast Ohio in Independence, OH seeks an Educational Interpreter of the Deaf (ASL) for a part-time assignment to provide interpreting for a preschool student from 8:00-11:30 Tuesday-Friday.

The role requires strong ASL skills and knowledge of educational interpreting standards. The interpreter will facilitate communication in inclusive, mainstream, and self-contained settings, collaborating with teachers and staff to support the student’s IEP and confidentiality requirements.

Qualifications

• Evidence of the Ohio Guidelines for Educational Interpreters.
• 2 years of college coursework or higher; Associate’s degree or ParaPro pathway.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with staff.
• Ability to lift equipment or children up to 40 pounds.
• Physical ability to perform all essential functions.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate knowledge of the Ohio Guidelines for Educational Interpreters.
• Follow classroom schedule and interpret for students as mandated by the student’s IEP.
• Interpret all class activities (lectures, discussions, films/videos, assemblies) during the contracted day.
• Collaborate with the educational team and provide in-service for new staff about working with an interpreter for a DHH student.
• Maintain confidentiality per district policy and RID code of conduct.
• Pursue professional development in signing ability and interpreting skills.
• Attend all in-service/professional development programming and staff meetings.

Educational Interpreter of the Deaf

Part Time Assignment: to provide ASL Interpreting for a preschool student from 8:00-11:30 Tuesday-Friday

Objective: Primary function is to facilitate communication, providing interpreting services in inclusive, mainstream, and self-contained settings. To serve as a liaison in promoting positive relations between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, their hearing peers, faculty, administration and other staff.

This facilitator will need to have strong American Sign Language skills as well as understand the role of facilitating language.

Essential Job Functions:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the Ohio Guidelines for Educational Interpreters
• Follow classroom schedule and interpret for students as mandated by the student's IEP
• Interpret all class activities (during the contracted day) to include: lectures, discussions, films/videos, assemblies, and any related assignment
• Collaborate as a member of the educational team obtaining lesson plans as well as providing in-service for new staff members about working with an interpreter/DHH student in the educational setting
• Maintain confidentiality as required by District policy, The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Professional Code of Conduct, and applicable law
• Pursue self-improvement and professional development opportunities in signing ability, interpreting skills and establishing a better understanding of the educational process
• Attend all In-service/Professional Development programming and staff meetings as required

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ohio Department of Education Associate License Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired
• 2 years of college coursework, OR an Associate's Degree or higher, OR high school diploma with passage of the ParaPro Assessment prior to employment
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to lift equipment, supplies and/or children weighing at least forty (40) pounds
• Physical ability to perform all of the essential functions of the job.
