Job summary

Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County in Ohio is seeking an Educational Interpreter of the Deaf (ASL) for a full-time assignment at Parma City Schools. This role provides interpreting services for a student, with 6.5 hours per day.

The interpreter will work to facilitate communication in inclusive, mainstream, and self-contained settings, coordinate with teachers, maintain confidentiality, and participate in professional development.

Qualifications

• Ohio Department of Education Associate License Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired is required.
• 2 years of college coursework, OR an Associate's Degree or higher, OR high school diploma with ParaPro passage.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with staff and students.
• Physical ability to lift equipment or assist children weighing up to 40 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Interpret all class activities during the contracted day, including lectures and discussions.
• Follow the classroom schedule and interpret per the student's IEP.
• Collaborate with the educational team and provide in-service for new staff on interpreter use.
• Maintain confidentiality as required by policy and professional standards.
• Pursue ongoing professional development in signing and interpreting skills.
• Attend in-service trainings and staff meetings as required.

Educational Interpreter of the Deaf

Full Time Assignment: to provide ASL Interpreting for a student, full time assignment for 6.5 hours per day.

Objective: Primary function is to facilitate communication, providing interpreting services in inclusive, mainstream, and self-contained settings. To serve as a liaison in promoting positive relations between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, their hearing peers, faculty, administration and other staff.

This facilitator will need to have strong American Sign Language skills as well as understand the role of facilitating language

Essential Job Functions:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the Ohio Guidelines for Educational Interpreters
• Follow classroom schedule and interpret for students as mandated by the student's IEP
• Interpret all class activities (during the contracted day) to include: lectures, discussions, films/videos, assemblies, and any related assignment
• Collaborate as a member of the educational team obtaining lesson plans as well as providing in-service for new staff members about working with an interpreter/DHH student in the educational setting
• Maintain confidentiality as required by District policy, The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Professional Code of Conduct, and applicable law
• Pursue self-improvement and professional development opportunities in signing ability, interpreting skills and establishing a better understanding of the educational process
• Attend all In-service/Professional Development programming and staff meetings as required

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ohio Department of Education Associate License Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired
• 2 years of college coursework, OR an Associate's Degree or higher, OR high school diploma with passage of the ParaPro Assessment prior to employment
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to lift equipment, supplies and/or children weighing at least forty (40) pounds
• Physical ability to perform all of the essential functions of the job.
