As an intern, you’ll work alongside licensed mechanical engineers and experienced designers while gaining experience with the HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems that make buildings comfortable, functional, efficient, and safe.

You’ll contribute to projects ranging from hangars and higher education facilities to mission critical environments, healthcare facilities, commercial buildings, tribal facilities, and more.

This is more than a summer of shadowing. You’ll contribute to active projects, strengthen your technical skills, make professional connections, and experience what working as a mechanical engineer within a multidisciplinary A/E firm is really like.

Technical Learning

  • Assist with HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical system design using Revit and AutoCAD
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations and assist with duct sizing, pipe sizing, equipment selection, and system layout
  • Support development of mechanical plans, schedules, diagrams, details, and construction documents
  • Gain exposure to HVAC equipment, plumbing systems, piping systems, energy efficiency, and building performance
  • Learn how the IMC, IPC, ASHRAE standards, and other applicable codes and design requirements are applied to real world projects
  • Gain exposure to the mechanical design process from concept through construction

Team Collaboration

  • Work alongside licensed mechanical engineers and experienced designers on active projects
  • Participate in coordination with architecture, electrical, structural, and fire protection teams
  • See how mechanical systems interact with other building systems through multidisciplinary BIM and project coordination
  • Gain exposure to project meetings, client communication, and the day‑to‑day processes behind successful project delivery

The FSB Internship Experience

During the summer, you’ll:

  • Connect with an FSB team member as a resource for questions, navigating the firm, and making connections throughout the summer
  • Participate in professional development programming, including leadership and project focused panels, Lunch & Learns, and other learning opportunities
  • Meet leaders and professionals from across FSB and learn about different career paths within the A/E industry
  • Build relationships with fellow interns and employees through networking, community service, and intern events
  • Develop your communication and presentation skills and wrap up the summer by sharing your experience and contributions through a final intern presentation
