Job summary

Columbia University seeks an International Student Adviser to provide immigration services for international students. The role includes advising on opportunities, rights, and responsibilities under US immigration laws, serving as DSO/ARO, and collaborating with university departments, legal counsel, and government agencies.

The ISA handles document issuance for visas, advises on employment authorization, and coordinates with SEVIS and USCIS to resolve status issues while supporting ISSO

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 years relevant immigration regulation, advisement, and compliance experience or equivalent combo of education and experience.
• Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 student immigration regulations, and SEVIS.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Advises on opportunities, rights, and responsibilities under US immigration laws; collaborates with university departments, legal counsel, or government agencies as needed.
• Acts as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in issuing required US government documents for international students.
• Consults with SEVIS Help Desk and USCIS to resolve processing or status problems.
• Advises and provides guidance to F-1 and J-1 students on immigration regulations and university policies, including maintaining status, extensions of stay, travel, transfers, and off-campus employment.
• Maintains and enhances knowledge of US immigration and school policies; presents at orientations and workshops; supports ISSO processes and services.
