Job summary

New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) seeks a dedicated internal writer to support the Commissioner’s weekly communications. You will craft human-interest staff stories, produce the Commissioner’s newsletter, and collaborate with cross-functional teams on deadlines and design.

The role requires strong writing/editing ability, interview experience, and comfort working with executive communications staff.

Qualifications

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear messaging.
• Skilled interviewer who can elicit compelling staff stories on deadline.
• Understanding of newsletter production workflows and editorial processes.
• Familiarity with internal communications metrics and audience engagement.

Responsibilities

• Be the lead writer for the NYC Health Commissioner’s internal content and weekly newsletter.
• Plan, conduct staff interviews and translate stories into engaging internal communications.
• Coordinate with executive communications and design partners to ensure accuracy and accessibility.
• Develop and maintain an internal communications calendar aligned with strategy.
• Support speechwriting efforts and contribute to broader communications projects.
