Job summary

South Dakota Department of Transportation in Sioux Falls offers three Intern - Transportation/Construction Engineering positions for the Summer session (May - August). Interns will gain hands-on experience on heavy highway projects under the guidance of project engineers and field staff.

Qualifications

• By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

• APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER.

Position Description

Interns will gain hands-on experience working on a variety of heavy highway construction projects, including grading, concrete paving, asphalt surfacing, and bridge construction. Under the guidance of the Project Engineer and field staff, interns will assist with sampling and testing construction materials, performing inspections to ensure work meets specifications, and supporting survey crews with field measurements and layout.

Interns will also be introduced to construction administration processes, including documentation and project recordkeeping. Duties are primarily performed outdoors and may be physically demanding, involving walking on uneven surfaces, lifting equipment, and standing for extended periods. This position provides a meaningful opportunity to learn how major transportation projects are built and to contribute to infrastructure that serves communities across South Dakota.
