Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems in Devens, MA is seeking an Intern - Manufacturing Engineer for Spring or Summer 2027. The 13–26 week internship runs 40–50 hours per week on-site, with pay based on year in school. Transportation and housing are the intern's responsibility when on site.

Interns work on developing and qualifying manufacturing processes, tooling design in CAD, and documentation such as SOPs, while contributing to continuous improvement and on-time production.

Qualifications

• Pursuing an engineering degree with focus in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering.
• CAD design experience and hands-on project exposure in a manufacturing setting.
• Experience in a machine shop or hands-on prototyping is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement and qualify manufacturing processes.
• Design and update tooling, fixtures and jigs using CAD software.
• Create and update process documentation such as work instructions and SOPs.
• Continuous improvement and standardization to improve safety, quality and delivery.
• Resolve production blockers to meet output targets.

If an intern is going to be on site, you will be responsible for your own transportation and housing• Specific project assignments and required technical skillset will vary based on the team’s existing need.• Opportunities available for currently enrolled college students in all levels of schooling from bachelor’s degree to PhD• Interns must be authorized to work in the United States for any employerWhat you'll do:• Develop, implement and qualify manufacturing processes• Design and update tooling, fixtures and jigs using CAD software• Create and update process documentation such as work instructions, flow sequences, standard operating procedures• Continuous improvement/ standardization- maintain and improve SOPs, documentation, safety/quality/delivery project execution• Resolve production blockers to ensure the team meets output targetsWhat we’re looking for:• Pursuing an engineering degree with focus in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering• CAD design experience• Familiarity with hand tools (machine shop experience is a plus)• Experience in a manufacturing environment.• Hands-on experience through academic research, project teams, machine shops, hackathons, or industry internships• Demonstration of exceptional results through a range of different pursuits• High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly with excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skillsMust-have Requirements:• Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally• Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time• Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenicsRates are aligned to your current year in school, ensuring equitable and consistent pay across our intern program.
