Job summary

Commerce Bank’s Legal Department is seeking a Summer 2027 intern to learn the in-house legal function. You will support the Legal team through research, drafting, and shadowing across regulatory topics.

The internship runs 11 weeks, May 18, 2027 to July 30, 2027, and is a paid, full-time opportunity with a Monday–Friday schedule. Most work is onsite at Commerce Bank.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled law student in accredited degree program.
• Law student internship with exposure to banking regulatory topics.

Responsibilities

• Perform legal research and draft memoranda on banking, IT, employment, and governance topics.
• Review regulatory updates and guidance.
• Review procedures for process improvements.
• Draft and edit contract templates and other documents.

Compensation Range

Hourly: $20.00 - $20.00 (Amount based on relevant experience, skills, and competencies.)

About This Job

Commerce’s Legal Department is hiring an intern for Summer 2027 to learn more about the in-house legal work we do within Commerce Bank. You will support the Legal team in various project work, research, drafting, and shadowing opportunities across a range of legal topics. You will also have an opportunity to meet other interns through participation in Commerce’s Internship Program. Consider applying if you are interested in learning more about the functions of an in-house legal team in a heavily regulated industry. The summer internship session will begin on Tuesday, May 18, 2027, and will run for 11 weeks, ending on Friday, July 30, 2027. Internships are paid, full-time opportunities with a Monday through Friday work schedule.

Essential Functions

• Perform legal research and draft memorandum on a wide range of topics, including, banking, information technology, employment, and corporate governance
• Review and summarize regulatory updates and guidance
• Review department procedures and analyze for process improvements
• Develop and implement procedural updates, as necessary
• Participate in meetings with CBI Legal and business stakeholders
• Review, draft and edit contract and other agreement templates
• Review CBI Intellectual Property
• Work with supervising attorneys supporting a variety of Bank lines of business
• Report regularly on project progress
• Capstone project and end of summer presentation with other interns in the Commerce Internship Program
• Perform other duties as assigned

Work Schedule

• Monday- Friday, 8:00am- 5:00pm
• Mostly onsite

Education & Experience

• Currently enrolled law student in accredited degree program
• For individuals applying, assigned and/or hired to work in areas with pay transparency requirements, Commerce is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for some roles. This compensation range is for the Intern job. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for any applicable differentials (geographic, bilingual, or shift) that could be associated with the position or where it is filled. A reasonable estimate of the current base pay is $20.00 per hour.
