Job summary

Jobtailor in Minneapolis is seeking a motivated geotechnical intern to support field investigations, sampling, and data analysis. You will assist with design development, project monitoring, and reporting to project managers and clients.

Qualifications

  • Ongoing enrollment in ABET-accredited geotechnical/geological engineering or civil degree with geotechnical emphasis.
  • Minimum one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after internship.
  • At least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
  • Proficiency with Windows OS and Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Able to rent a vehicle for out-of-town assignments.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Willingness to travel and adjust schedule for project needs.
  • Ability to work in rough terrain, with or without accommodations.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site support for construction observation, material testing, surveying, and subsurface investigations.
  • Perform geotechnical field investigations, collect field samples, and log exploratory test borings.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations and analysis.
  • Develop design details and assist in designing solutions.
  • Monitor construction projects and prepare drawings, specifications, and sketches.
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing projects.
  • Help ensure project milestones are met.
  • Provide regular updates to project managers and clients.
  • Communicate effectively with project team members and clients.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives.
  • Work on geotechnical computer modeling and fieldwork.

Requirements

  • Coursework or research related to advanced soil mechanics
  • Minimum of one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after the internship
  • At least two semesters of physics
  • Three semesters of mathematics
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office software
  • Current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to rent a vehicle for out-of-town assignments
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs
  • Ability to work in rough terrain, around moving machinery, and in industrial facilities, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, including scheduling, prioritizing, and follow-up
  • Ability to effectively present technical information to diverse audiences
