Job summary

Dominion Energy is seeking an Engineering Intern for Fault Analysis in Richmond, VA. You will support the Fault Analysis team with data-driven investigations, automation, and software development for transmission operations.

You will work under supervision to gain fundamental engineering knowledge, learn industry practices, and contribute to DOE/utility standards while developing new monitoring technologies.

Qualifications

  • Working toward a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • Anticipated graduation Spring 2028 or later.
  • GPA 3.0 or greater.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with setup and commissioning of monitoring equipment.
  • Design a wiring standard for new equipment under supervision.
  • Support data requests and operational analysis for Power Delivery personnel.
  • Provide fault location analysis for Electric Transmission stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with ROC/SOC on substation communications and SCADA systems.
  • Develop software applications, tools, and dashboards for transmission operations and fault analysis.
  • Create APIs and automated workflows to improve efficiency and reduce manual work.
  • Maintain and develop existing applications and test new features.

Job Summary

The selected Engineering Intern will assist the Fault Analysis team in Richmond, Virginia.

Fault Analysis ensures electric grid reliability by analyzing system events 24/7 using a combination of technical skills including data processing, software development, and engineering principles. Our strategically deployed monitoring equipment and in-house diagnostic tools enable teams across Dominion Energy to expedite restoration of service, direct fact-finding investigations, and facilitate NERC compliance activities.

A supervisor or senior engineer mentor will provide the intern with structured assignments designed to develop fundamental engineering knowledge, awareness of industry techniques and practices, and familiarity with power systems equipment. These projects may include components addressing electrical engineering, substation communications, computer programming, and Operations Technology Solutions (OTS) application development.

Fault Analysis Engineering Intern projects may include:

  • Assist with setup and commissioning of monitoring equipment.
  • Design a wiring standard for new equipment under the supervision of system protection engineers and field technicians.
  • Assist Power Delivery personnel with data requests and operational analysis.
  • Provide fault location analysis for Electric Transmission stakeholders.
  • Support substation communications with the Regional Operations Center (ROC) and System Operations Center (SOC) Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
  • Collaborate with team members to enhance automation of data retrieval and data analytics.
  • Develop a new application to install directly on monitoring devices to remotely control and monitor health.
  • Collaborate with Distribution Engineering and equipment manufacturers on the design and implementation of new monitoring technology pilot projects.
  • Develop software applications, tools, and dashboards that support transmission operations, fault analysis, and operational decision-making.
  • Enhance and maintain existing business-critical applications while supporting development and testing of new features and functionality.
  • Design APIs, system integrations, and automated workflows that improve efficiency, reduce manual effort, and streamline operational processes.
  • Support database and application administration activities including monitoring, troubleshooting, testing, deployment, and performance optimization.
  • Create technical documentation, user guides, and support materials that promote knowledge sharing, user adoption, and continuous improvement.
  • Support safety, training, and human performance initiatives.
    • Basic knowledge of electrical engineering principles, including power systems, substations, and transmission equipment gained through academic coursework or self-study.
    • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret technical data and identify trends or anomalies.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and the ability to learn new engineering and data management tools.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively document and present technical information.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Experience developing software applications, web-based tools, dashboards, or automation solutions through coursework, personal projects, internships, or extracurricular activities.
  • Familiarity with relational databases, SQL queries, and data management concepts.
  • Exposure to application programming interfaces (APIs), system integrations, or automated workflows.
  • Experience using source control tools such as Git and collaborating in a team software development environment.
  • Knowledge of data analytics, visualization tools, or scripting techniques used to support engineering and operational decision-making.
  • Understanding of electric utility operations, SCADA systems, communications networks, or power system monitoring technologies.
Education Requirements
  • Applicants are required to be working towards a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • Prefer an anticipated graduation date of Spring 2028 or later.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or greater is required.

Hourly Rate:

$23.00 - $29.00

The hourly rate listed is the rate we anticipate paying for this position. If a range is listed, the actual hourly rate offered may vary based on factors such as the selected candidate's degree type, academic major, and/or school classification (e.g., sophomore, junior, senior).
