Job summary

Prairie State Generating Company offers a summer intern program for Electrical Engineering students, lasting 12–13 weeks from mid-May through August. Interns work on Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering projects, gaining hands-on experience with power systems and control technologies.

Under supervision, interns will collect data, study schematics, and prepare a final presentation for Plant Management. Attendance is expected to be reliable throughout the program.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a college program pursuing an Electrical Engineering degree.
• Must maintain good academic standing.
• Available for a 12–13 week internship from mid-May to early/mid-August.

Responsibilities

• Work on Plant Operations, Maintenance and/or Engineering projects including optimization and improvement.
• Assist with Plant Control Systems (PLCs and DCS) under supervision.
• Engage with Plant Power Systems (HV, MV, LV) with guidance from engineers.
• Collect and interpret data to improve system functionality and efficiency.
• Develop understanding of electrical schematics, one-lines, connection drawings, and P&IDs.
• Prepare a presentation describing work to Plant Management at internship end.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Overview

Prairie State Generating Company is looking for college students who are interested in a summer intern program in the power generation industry. A limited number of internships are available for college students enrolled in specific curriculum. Participating as an intern will provide experience and exposure to state-of-the-art technology in an operating power plant. Student interns will receive industry experience, hands-on training, paid intern program and exposure to industry professionals.

Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following (other duties and responsibilities may be assigned):

• Working on Plant Operations, Maintenance and /or Engineering projects which include optimization and improvement projects.
• Working on Plant Control Systems (PLCs and DCS) with oversight from system engineers.
• Working on Plant Power Systems (High Voltage, Medium Voltage, and Low Voltage) with oversight from system engineers.
• Work on Data Collection and Interpretation to improve System Functionality and Efficiency.
• Develop an understanding of electrical schematics, one-lines, connection drawings, and P&IDs.
• Develop a presentation describing your work to Plant Management to be presented at the end of your internship.
• Regular and reliable attendance required.

Education/Experience

• To be considered, an individual MUST be enrolled in a college program and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Must be in good academic standing.
• MUST be available for a 12-13 week program beginning in Mid/Late-May to Early/Mid-August.

Knowledge of

• Safety and health hazards associated with each job assignment.
• Basic understanding of control systems is desired.
• Basic understanding of power systems is desired.

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to clearly communicate with co-workers, supervisors and others.
• Ability to read and understand operating procedures.
• Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Ability to work unsupervised as required.
• Ability to enter confined spaces, climb ladders and wear respirators as needed.
• Ability to sit, stand, reach, stoop, and lift boxes weighing as much as 25 pounds.
• Proficiency in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

At Prairie State, the base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is $25.00 per hour for the Undergraduate level and $28.00 per hour for the Graduate level.
