BHE GT&S is offering a summer internship for a Mechanical Engineering student in the Compression Services Department at our White Oaks General Office in Bridgeport, WV. The program runs for at least 8 weeks starting June 2027, with potential extension and a housing stipend for candidates from distant areas.

Ideal candidates are pursuing a 4-year ABET-accredited mechanical engineering degree, maintain a 2.5+ GPA, and possess strong MS Word/Excel skills.

Formación

• Pursuing a 4-year ABET-accredited Mechanical Engineering degree.
• Must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior by summer 2027.
• Minimum GPA 2.5 (3.0 preferred).
• Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Able to work in a team or independently.
• Must have a valid driver's license.

Responsabilidades

• Compare operating data against compressor curves/models (suction/discharge, flow, HP, loading, efficiency).
• Validate compressor models against OEM and field data.
• Analyze operating points to assess equipment configurations.
• Compare fuel consumption, HP and throughput across engines/stations.
• Organize historical data and compare air/fuel curves, ignition timing, and emissions results.
• Trend temperatures, NOx, ammonia usage, catalyst performance and issues on SCR installations.
• Work with vibration, pressure, temperature and performance trends to identify issues.
• Develop basic sizing/performance knowledge for centrifugal compressors.
• Support internship with virtual events aligned to NACE career-ready competencies.

BHE GT&S has an exciting summer internship opportunity for a Mechanical Engineering student within our Compression Services Department at our White Oaks General Office located in Bridgeport, WV.

Responsibilities

• Compare actual operating data against compressor curves/models, looking at suction/discharge pressure, flow, HP, loading and efficiency
• Help validate compressor models against OEM data and field operating data
• Analyze operating points and determine whether existing pockets, clearance devices or cylinder configurations are appropriate
• Compare fuel consumption, HP and throughput across engines/stations
• Organize historical mapping data and compare air/fuel curves, ignition timing, load and emissions results
• Trend temperatures, NOx, ammonia usage, catalyst performance and operating issues on selected SCR installations
• Work with vibration, pressure, temperature and performance trends to identify developing equipment issues
• Start developing basic sizing/performance knowledge for centrifugal compressor
• To support your summer internship experience we offer a series of virtual events that support the National Association of College and Employers (NACE) career-ready competencies so that you can learn more about our values, our work, and each other.

Individuals must have a desire to learn and produce as part of a safety conscious workplace. An independent source of transportation for this summer 2027 internship is needed as there are limited public transportation options in the area. Your summer internship will consist of a minimum of 8 weeks on site and will begin June 7. Please note: the internship could be extended considering your summer schedule and the needs of the business, so a start date prior to June 7 and/or extended end date could be a possibility.

*Successful candidates who are 50 miles or more from the assigned work location may be eligible for a one-time housing stipend.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior as of summer of 2027.
• Currently be enrolled in a 4 year ABET accredited Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's degree program.
• Must have a 2.5 GPA or higher (3.0 preference).
• Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Ability to create and work with Word/Excel spreadsheet and reports.
• Ability to work effectively within a team environment or independently.
• Good planning and organizing skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to assist in performing preventative equipment maintenance activities as required.
• Preliminary work experience demonstrating knowledge of equipment and repair.
• Analytical and deductive reasoning skills, oral/written communication skills, technical writing skills, electrical/mechanical skill/mathematical skills.
• Ability to analyze/troubleshoot/solve equipment or process problems.
• Ability to conduct site inspections or walk downs, including working at heights and in confined spaces.
• Ability to maintain drawing and configuration documentation as related to repairs and modification.
• Ability to use basic hand tools, basic measuring and testing equipment, and small power tools.
• Ability to articulate technical subject matter both verbally and written.
• Knowledge of environmental regulations.
• Good communications and problem-solving skills.
• Self-motivated and have a strong work ethic.
• Prefer students with active participation in a university engineering organization, especially, in a leadership role.
• Must currently hold a valid driver's license.

Education

• Currently enrolled in a 4-year ABET accredited Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's degree program.
• Candidate must be at least a rising sophomore, junior or senior by summer 2027.
• Candidates must have a 2.5 GPA or higher (Preference 3.0 GPA or higher).
