Job summary

Engineering Systems Inc. (ESi) seeks a motivated engineering intern to join the Civil/Structural team in Illinois. The role focuses on field inspections, data collection, and supporting analysis and drafting tasks under supervision.

Responsibilities include site visits, preparing AutoCAD drawings, using SAP2000 or similar software for analyses, and compiling technical reports. A 3-year college track in civil engineering or physics/science with a 3.0+ GPA is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Completed 3 years of college in Civil engineering or Physics/Science program.
  • 3.00 GPA or higher, preferred.
  • Intermediate CAD and office productivity software.

ESi's Civil and Structural team evaluates, investigates, and restores structures and sites through detailed inspections, engineering analysis, and research. By identifying causes of damage and failure, the team develops practical solutions that improve safety, performance, and reliability across the built environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Site visits to perform inspections of existing structures.
  • Dimensional documentation of structures and understanding of existing structural systems.
  • Condition assessment or damage documentation of damaged or other existing structures.

  • Preparing AutoCAD drawings detailing proposed repairs or retrofits to existing structures.

  • Internships with ESi are expected to be full‑time, 40 hours per week, from Monday to Friday (Business hours are from 8 am-5 pm).
  • If you are participating in our co‑op program - we require that you are taking no more than 2 classes during your employment with ESi and are able to work a minimum of 32 hours per week.
Qualifications
Education / Certifications / Licenses
  • Completed 3 years of college in Civil engineering or Physics/Science program.
  • 3.00 GPA or higher, preferred.
Experience
  • Any experience performing field investigations, structural inspections, structural analysis, structural design, technical report writing, and preparation is preferred.
Other Technical & Non-Technical Skills
  • Intermediate skills with CAD and office productivity software.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to travel for trips of three days in length.
Physical Demands

This role requires frequently sitting or standing for extended periods of time and occasionally lifting and/or moving items weighing up to 50 pounds, with infrequent lifting up to 75 pounds. The work regularly requires bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, and maintaining balance. This position frequently requires handling and operating specialized tools and equipment and working in a variety of physical positions, including occasionally accessing tight or confined spaces. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Work Environment

Work is performed in both office and field environments, including active construction sites, industrial settings, and damaged or compromised structures.
