Job summary

Discovery Land Company and its private residential club communities seek a seasoned Director of Design to guide luxury architectural and interior design for lakefront homes and club amenities. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, manage consultant workflows, review selections with clients, and ensure construction documents reflect the latest design intent across projects.

You will coordinate with consultants, vendors, and operations to align design with the overall club experience and delivery

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Interior Design preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in architectural planning and design on luxury-level projects, including horizontal development.
  • Architectural registration not required; non-active registration acceptable for candidates with a license.
  • Experience in resourcing, selecting, and managing consultant teams for high-end residential and golf club amenities.
  • Depth of understanding of operations for design, planning, and programming of new construction.
  • Proficient with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, Bluebeam, PowerPoint, and Adobe Design Suite.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, SketchUp, BIM/Revit.
  • Ability to review and recommend designs, plans, geotechnical studies, and specs.
  • Create and manage RFPs to designers/contractors for initial design team selection.
  • Knowledge of construction means/methods to properly design and value-engineer construction.
  • Ability to set up schedules and budgets for departments and projects.
  • Ability to supervise technical staff and interpret complex instructions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce overall vision, program, and design direction for DLC Project.
  • Collaborate with consultants to manage drawings for various developer products and amenities.
  • Meet with clients and sales team to review product and discuss design options for homes.
  • Schedule and manage customer meetings to review selections and pass notes to consultants.
  • Create and manage a selections book for each home and coordinate handoff to construction.
  • Meet with vendors to provide specs and design information for products.
  • Lead meetings with consultants, contractors, and clients.
  • Prepare meeting agendas and provide notes/minutes.
  • Mentor design assistants and guide task completion and reporting.
  • Coordinate with operations on area programming and FF&E with construction team for design/look.
  • Coordinate with client’s consultants and vendors on execution of homes.
  • Provide design input to construction team for latest information.

Job description

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the development team to enforce the overall vision, program, and design direction for DLC Project.
  • Work with consultants to manage the design and oversee the production of architectural and engineering drawings for different developer product types, as well as several development amenities.
  • Meet with prospective clients and the sales team to review developer product and discuss design options when selecting a home.
  • Schedule, conduct, and manage customer meetings to review selections for each home; take design notes and provide them to consultants and the design team to incorporate selections into the construction documents.
  • Create and manage a selections book for each home and work with the development/construction team to ensure proper handoff for construction.
  • Meet with vendors to provide specifications and design information for products used in our development product.
  • Meet, attend, and lead meetings with consultants, contractors, and clients.
  • Prepare an agenda for any meeting led and provide notes and minutes after all meetings, or delegate this responsibility to an assistant.
  • Manage and mentor design assistant(s), providing guidance and direction for completing tasks, meetings, reports, or any collateral required.
  • Coordinate with the operations team on the programming of areas by providing design input, working with FF&E consultants/vendors, and coordinating with the construction team to execute the design and overall look for the club.
  • Coordinate with the client's consultants and vendors in the execution of their home.
  • Work with the construction team to ensure they have the latest information.
Skills & Qualifications

  • Computer skills must include the following programs: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, Bluebeam, PowerPoint, and Adobe Design Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Specialized software process and functional familiarity may include AutoCAD, SketchUp, and BIM/Revit.
  • Ability to review, analyze, and make recommendations regarding designs, plans, geotechnical studies, and specifications.
  • Create, distribute, and manage RFPs to designers and contractors for initial selection of the design team and contractor.
  • Intimate knowledge of construction means and methods to properly design, value engineer, and manage the construction process.
  • Able to establish and manage departmental and project schedules and budgets.
  • Ability to supervise and plan the work of technical and professional subordinates.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret and carry out complex oral and written instructions, including reading and interpreting blueprints and specifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with consultants.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern principles, processes, and practices of architecture, engineering, and interior design.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and regulatory agency guidelines.
