Job summary

Newton Public Schools Day Middle School seeks an Interim Assistant Principal for Student Services, overseeing special education, guidance and counseling programs at the middle school level. The role requires licensure as Administrator and Special Educator in Massachusetts, along with several years of administrative experience and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in education administration, special education, or related field.
• Massachusetts DESE Administrator and Special Educator licensure.
• Three+ years of administrative experience.
• Thorough knowledge of special education regulations.
• Ability to supervise, coach and mentor teachers and counselors.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
• Solid technological skills and data analysis ability.
• Organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Organize, supervise, and evaluate all guidance, special education, and counseling programs.
• Supervise and evaluate all members of the Student Services department.
• Encourage staff development and provide ongoing in-service programs.
• Develop and promote high standards of teaching and learning for all.
• Model commitment to a succinct mission and data-informed decisions.
• Assist staff with day-to-day instructional issues and act as a resource.
• Monitor and provide consultation for the department.
• Coordinate hiring for teachers and aides in the department.
• Monitor student progress and oversee evaluation referrals and teams.
• Analyze data sources to inform decision-making.
• Maintain accurate student records in compliance with laws.
• Oversee registration, placement and orientation for middle school students.
• Coordinate transitions from elementary to middle and middle to high school.
• Oversee MCAS and other testing programs.
• Supervise IEP development and promote programs for students with needs.
• Develop new programs to meet needs in the least restrictive environment.
• Administer and coordinate tutoring programs.
• Other duties as needed.
