Job description

West End Collegiate Church

Position: Interim Finance Manager

Term: Part-Time (25hrs/week) through June 30, 2027

Salary: $55,000/annually

Reports to: Rev. William Critzman, Senior Minister

DESCRIPTION

West End Collegiate Church is a progressive, inclusive, vibrant community of faith ministering to our ever-changing city in the name of our all-changing God. We are young and old, of many races and abilities, of various genders and sexualities, people on journeys and people longing to put down roots.

We see our diversity as an expression of God’s immense imagination, and we value hospitality, inclusivity, equity, and belonging.

West End is one of three ministries of The Collegiate Church of the New York and is a member congregation of the United Church of Christ (UCC). Founded in 1628, The Collegiate Church is the oldest continually worshipping church in the country and is deeply embedded in the history of our city. While we celebrate our past, we lean into our dynamic and creative future. West End Church is structured as an LLC and operates as a nonprofit entity. It is a constituent organization of the umbrella organization,

The Collegiate Church. West End consolidates with the Collegiate entities for financial reporting purposes. The Collegiate Church’s Central Office provides certain centralized financial, audit, payroll, HR, and other shared services. This position will work as part of the local West End team, and as the link between West End and the Collegiate system.

We are seeking a part-time Interim Finance Manager (IFM) to work with the Senior Minister of West End Church and the Director of Finance of the Central Office to further support the long-term sustainability of West End Church. The Interim Finance Manager will work a part-time, Monday – Friday, in-person schedule at West End Church. It is possible that this position could become permanent.

The IFM will transition West End Church from our current outsourced bookkeeping and in-house financial support systems to a more efficient, automated, and effective workflow for all financial and administration matters. In addition to reporting to the Senior Minister and to working directly with the Director of Finance, the IFM will also liaise with Central Office’s CHRO in matters related to payroll and benefits administration.

KEY DUTIES

  • Reconcile credit card statements, employee reimbursements, and program expenses;
  • With the Senior Minister, track the annual budget and ensure on-track status in real-time;
  • Generate checks, ACH batch payments, and other electronic payments as required and ensure that payments reach the intended recipients;
  • Provide documentation, receipts and schedules as requested by the Director of Finance, The Collegiate Church’s Audit Committee, or the Senior Minister;
  • Create and implement nonprofit accounting best practices at the local level and ensure compliance with the Central Office’s policies;
  • Work with the Senior Minister and West End’s Board Treasurer to advise and develop an ongoing permanent financial workflow solution for after July 1, 2027;
  • Develop a good in-person relationship with our local bank branch team, make deposits, and conduct financial affairs as needed between West End Church and our bank(s);
  • Monitor our assets under management (endowment) and work with our fund managers and Treasurer to monitor gains/losses and quarterly withdrawals;
  • Work with the CHRO to ensure compliance in payroll and administrative matters, particularly when it comes to part-time employees, freelance contractors, and artists;
  • Contribute to the culture of West End Church that strives to be a place to belong, that is warm and welcoming, and centered on helping individuals and our community thrive;
  • Celebrate your own and others’ successes, admit when you are wrong, and work collaboratively with the team to always seek the smarter not harder solution.
