Location: Kansas City, MO
Work Arrangement: On-site, 5 days per week
Engagement: Interim, approximately 2 months

Cherry Bekaert Recruiting & Staffing is seeking an experienced Interim Controller to support a privately held organization in Kansas City. This is a hands-on consulting opportunity for an accounting professional who can step into an established environment, take ownership of the day-to-day accounting function, and ensure financial operations continue moving smoothly during a period of transition.

The organization has a relatively straightforward structure consisting primarily of investments and a business unit. The Controller will be fully responsible for the full range of the accounting functions, except they will be partnering with an existing staff member responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, and administrative HR functions.

Responsibilities

• Take hands-on ownership of the organization’s general accounting and financial reporting activities
• Manage the monthly close process and ensure the books are complete and accurate
• Prepare financial statements and related financial reporting
• Oversee general ledger activity and account reconciliations
• Support accounting activities associated with the organization’s investments and operating business
• Provide accounting oversight for inventory-related activity at the operating business
• Work closely with the administrative team member responsible for AP and AR
• Maintain continuity of accounting processes and controls during the interim period
• Partner directly with the COO of the operating business on financial and accounting matters
• Address additional day-to-day accounting needs as they arise in a lean, hands-on environment

Requirements

• Strong Controller-level or senior accounting leadership experience
• Demonstrated ability to personally manage month-end close, general ledger accounting, and financial statement preparation
• Comfortable working in a hands-on environment where the Controller is responsible for both oversight and execution
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and core accounting processes
• Ability to quickly assess existing accounting activities and operate independently with minimal ramp-up
• Experience working within a privately held, closely held, or similarly lean organization is beneficial
• Inventory, distribution, or manufacturing-related accounting experience is helpful but not required
• Microsoft Dynamics GP / Great Plains experience is a plus, but not required
• Ability to work on-site five days per week in Kansas City required

Ideal Candidate

The ideal consultant is a seasoned Controller who enjoys being close to the accounting work and can comfortably operate without a large accounting team. This opportunity would be particularly well suited for someone who can quickly understand the existing processes, and independently keep the books, close, and financial reporting moving forward.
