Job description

Interface Analyst/Engineer (Application Engineer, Sr.) based in United States.

This is a senior technical role focused on designing, developing, and supporting complex healthcare system integrations in a mission-driven clinical environment.

The position plays a key role in connecting electronic health record systems with clinical, administrative, state, federal, and partner applications.

You will translate complex workflows and business requirements into reliable system-to-system interfaces using HL7 and modern interface-engine technologies.

The role combines hands-on engineering with business analysis, project coordination, application support, testing, documentation, and customer training.

You will work closely with clinical teams, database and system administrators, vendors, and technical stakeholders to ensure integrations are secure, accurate, scalable, and supportable.

The position also provides an opportunity to troubleshoot critical healthcare interfaces and contribute to 24/7 support for essential clinical systems.

Success requires strong healthcare IT expertise, analytical thinking, ownership, and the ability to solve complex integration challenges independently.

Accountabilities
  • Analyze clinical and operational workflows with customers, database administrators, IT support teams, management, and healthcare vendors to develop detailed system-to-system interface and data conversion specifications.
  • Assess hardware and software requirements needed to implement interfaces and support data conversion into the Epic environment.
  • Meet regularly with customers to review requirements, clarify specifications, prioritize interface initiatives, and communicate implementation plans.
  • Develop and deliver training for customers, hospital staff, designated trainers, operations teams, and help desk personnel on new or modified systems and application functionality.
  • Maintain an interface design guide and train interface developers on standards for maintainability, accuracy, security, performance, and supportability.
  • Perform code and interface reviews to ensure solutions comply with established technical and design standards.
  • Translate interface specifications into working data flows and develop complex mappings and filtering logic using Epic Bridges and the Rhapsody Interface Engine.
  • Design and execute interface validation plans, coordinate testing activities, and oversee validation efforts involving technical resources and interface analysts.
  • Monitor system activity across UNIX and Windows environments and troubleshoot interface performance and operational issues.
  • Work with Epic data structures, including CACHE-based structures, and develop file off-load and reporting routines using supported tools.
  • Coordinate TCP/IP communication configurations for system-to-system interface connectivity.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical, operational, interface, and system documentation.
  • Partner closely with database and system administrators to implement, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize supported systems.
  • Lead the design and implementation of interfaces between Epic, state and federal systems, and ancillary healthcare applications through detailed project plans, dependencies, milestones, and critical-path activities.
  • Track project tasks and deliverables across internal teams, vendors, and customers, proactively identifying risks and escalating missed or at-risk milestones to management.
  • Coordinate project meetings, prepare progress materials, document outcomes, and provide regular status reports to leadership.
  • Own and coordinate tickets associated with interface projects and ensure timely resolution of assigned technical issues.
  • Diagnose application and interface problems and develop corrective action plans involving procedures, data corrections, scripts, interface engine modifications, upgrades, and application fixes.
  • Coordinate production and test-environment installations, data conversions, application upgrades, and validation activities.
  • Provide primary technical support for interface-related issues, including ADT, order entry, results reporting, billing, and other critical healthcare workflows.
  • Use Bridges and Rhapsody to troubleshoot complex issues and interpret C++ and JavaScript code when required.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule supporting system-to-system interfaces and critical electronic medical record integrations 24/7.
  • Provide technical guidance on clinical applications to IT and clinical teams and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical discipline plus eight years of relevant experience; alternatively, an Associate’s degree plus nine years of relevant experience, ten years of relevant experience without a degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least two years of paid experience working as an Application Engineer.
  • Experience with Epic data structures and Epic Clarity applications.
  • Intermediate to expert-level programming experience with JavaScript and SQL.
  • Experience with the Orion Rhapsody Interface Engine or an equivalent healthcare interface engine.
  • Experience working with UNIX systems, particularly Rhapsody server file organization and related technical environments.
  • Experience with terminal emulation, file transfer technologies, data conversion, and system integration processes.
  • Experience with Cognos Framework Manager, Query Studio, and Report Studio.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop healthcare interfaces using the HL7 standard and work with TCP/IP communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of distributed healthcare applications such as HIS, LIS, RIS, pharmacy, registration, scheduling, patient accounts, and related clinical or administrative systems.
  • Strong experience analyzing, designing, testing, validating, and supporting healthcare information systems.
  • Working knowledge of hospital and clinic operations and patient-care workflows.
  • Ability to independently investigate complex technical problems, identify root causes, and drive issues through resolution while maintaining a strong customer focus.
  • Strong quality assurance and testing skills, including the ability to assess new software applications, features, and beta releases.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and technical tasks while consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical users.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard PC-based business applications.
  • Preferred experience with healthcare HL7 interface training or certification.
  • Preferred experience with databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Access, Unify, or comparable technologies.

  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Childcare service discounts.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
