Job description

Interdisciplinary Fisheries Biologist/Wildlife Biologist

Serves as the Wildlife and Fisheries Program Manager responsible for planning, coordinating, programming, and directing all activities related to the management of wildlife and fisheries resources on an Intermountain Region, Region 4 unit.

Duties
  • Provide guidance for developing wildlife and fisheries management plans, habitat management plans, and protection strategies for aquatic resources.
  • Inspect habitat improvement projects for compliance and recommend further habitat protection or improvements.
  • Lead habitat and population monitoring studies for fish, amphibians, and wildlife to ensure habitat and species maintenance.
  • Plan habitat management programs emphasizing biodiversity preservation and enhancement.
  • Review habitat management plans for technical accuracy and alignment with management objectives.
  • Translate policies and directives into local programs and guidance.
  • Participate as a member of an Interdisciplinary Planning Team (IDT).
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service or be exempt.
  • Subject to background checks and fingerprinting.
  • Complete a one-year probationary period unless previously served.
  • Federal payments must be made via direct deposit.
  • Must pass E-Verify employment verification.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the specified educational and experience requirements by the closing date. Detailed qualification standards are available through the Office of Personnel Management.

Applications should clearly demonstrate experience, and transcripts are required for education-based qualifications, including course descriptions if needed.

This position is interdisciplinary and may be filled from the following series:

Basic Requirements:
Fish Biology Series GS-0482:
  • Degree in Biological Science with at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects and 12 in animal sciences.
Wildlife Biology Series GS-0486:
  • Degree in Biological Science with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 in zoology, and 9 in botany or related plant sciences.
Experience Requirements:

For GS-11: One year of specialized experience at GS-09 level or higher, or equivalent graduate education leading to a Ph.D., or a combination of both.

For GS-12: One year of specialized experience at GS-11 level or higher, demonstrating expertise in wildlife or fishery programs.

Volunteer experience is also considered and should be documented clearly in the resume, including dates, hours, duties, and position details.
