Job Summary:

WSESU is looking for a motivating, engaging, and diverse educator and encourages all who are interested in diversity, equity and social justice to consider working with us. The Intensive Services Interventionist will assist in the development, implementation, and revision for highly detailed special education programs for at least one student with intensive needs or to be the program assistant supporting a specialized program for students with intensive social-emotional needs. In doing so, they work in partnership with teachers, special educators, and related services staff to provide unique and highly structured special education programs. These staff members are expected to function independently, after training and under supervision, to implement programming for students in WSESU’s intensive services classrooms, specialized intensive social-emotional programs, or to provide inclusion support for high-needs students within the general education setting.

Job Requirements

• QUALIFICATIONS:
  All paraprofessionals must meet State definition of Highly Qualified Paraprofessional (HQP) through one of the following: Associates Degree, successful completion (b-minus or better) of at least 48 credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning, or successful completion of an approved paraprofessional assessment test required.
  Three years of relevant experience is preferred.
  Experience using Applied Behavior Analysis and PBIS in education settings.
  Knowledge of best practices in positive behavior intervention relating to social skills, discrete trial training, academic access, and learning school routines and expectations.
  Knowledge of federal/state restraint and seclusion protocols as well as trained to execute interventions using CPI or similar de-escalation and restraint methods
  Genuine desire to work with students with intensive needs required. Ability to work independently with individuals and groups.
  CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  Ability to become certified and proficient in the following within 6 months of hire:
  -Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or Safety-Care procedures and protocol
  -CPR and First Aid
  -Successful passage of district approved paraprofessional assessment test
  -Additional training as required for assignment
  PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  Provides direct instruction to eligible students in a respectful and supportive manner as students participate in assigned classroom, school and alternative learning settings
  Demonstrates good interpersonal and communication skills with students, community members, parents, guardians, staff and supervisors
  Demonstrates and adhere to district policies and procedures
  Maintains confidentiality of student information and records
  Attends and participate in assigned IEP, EPT, Transition, and Coordinated Service Plan meetings in a positive, constructive, and collaborative manner
  Discusses all matters related to students, parents and staff with cooperating Special Educator and other relevant service providers
  Participates in training to meet student(s) individual educational needs
  Offers assistance to classroom teachers, special educators, assistants/tutors and other staff members as time and conditions warrant
  Implements behavior programs as directed
  Assists students with occupational, speech, and/or physical therapy
  Provides assistance to students as required in areas of physical need, field trips, community/work study environments, assemblies and other such functions during hours of school operation.
  Completes assigned duties as per IEP needs/goals (IE: lunchroom, recess, and or bus) assigned by supervisor or principal.
  Applies knowledge of learning and child development theories in their work with students.
  Participates, as an active member and positive partner, in the planning of instruction and lessons
  Independently leads instructional activities in any setting as detailed by lesson plans
  Uses good communication, interpersonal, and instructional skills to independently address and resolve student learning and behavior issues
  Independently problem solves and resolves student instructional and behavior challenges
  Assists in the planning, manage the service delivery and provide direct instruction for detailed, ongoing, behavior and /or language based instructional programs. (e.g. Picture Exchange Program, ASL, Positive Behavior Plans or approved by the Director/Coordinator of Special Education)
  Must demonstrate ability to problem solve, adjust programming when appropriate and manage student crisis using a team approach.
  Implements all aspects of services and instruction to meet student needs as outlined above.

  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  Annual CPI or Safety-Care certification required for safe and appropriate de-escalation and physical intervention of students to maintain safe learning environments.
  The position requires frequent walking, bending, standing, stooping.
  Student assignment will require physical support, such as lifting, transition support, personal care support, including toileting, self-care and feeding.
  Ability to use adaptive equipment to assist with physical transitions and equipment individualized for each student.
  Ability to lift 50 pounds.
