Job summary

The US Department of Energy Headquarters is seeking an Intelligence Research Specialist within the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence to analyze foreign nuclear capabilities and related technologies in the Foreign Nuclear Programs Division.

Specialized experience at GS-12 to GS-14 levels is required, with demonstrated ability to create clear technical reports and brief senior decision-makers. The role emphasizes rigorous analysis and cross-agency collaboration.

Qualifications

  • GS-12: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 in the Federal service; meet 2 of 3: analyze technical/scientific data, identify trends and potential CS/NSCs; create and edit technical reports; prepare and deliver presentations.
  • GS-13: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12; meet 2 of 3: conduct detailed technical research and intelligence analysis on foreign nuclear programs; write clear technical reports for senior leaders; present information to leaders and committees.
  • GS-14: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-13; meet 2 of 3: lead research projects on foreign nuclear capabilities and related technologies; review/edit technical reports for high quality; provide regular briefings to senior leaders.

Job description

This position is part of the Department of Energy's Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence (IN). As an Intelligence Research Specialist, you will provides intelligence analysis of foreign nuclear capabilities and intentions under the Foreign Nuclear Programs Division (FNPD).

For the GS-12

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 OF THE 3 of the following

  • (1) Analyzing technical and scientific data to identify trends, evaluate capabilities, and support assessments of potential national security concerns.
  • (2) Creating and editing technical reports and analytical assessments, in a clear, organized and actionable format.
  • (3) Preparing and delivering presentations on technical findings or research developments to supervisors, stakeholders, and collaborative teams.
For the GS-13

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 OF THE 3 of the following

  • (1) Conducting detailed technical research and intelligence analysis on foreign nuclear weapons programs, nuclear systems and related military technologies.
  • (2) Writing detailed technical reports that explain complex engineering and scientific information in a clear and organized way for senior leaders, clients, and other decision makers.
  • (3) Presenting technical information, briefing leaders, and representing your organization in meetings, committees, and technical working groups.
For the GS 14

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-13 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 OF THE 3 of the following

  • (1) Leading research projects or serving as a senior expert analyzing foreign nuclear capabilities, weapons designs, nuclear materials, and/or related strategic military technologies.
  • (2) Reviewing and editing technical reports, scientific papers, and intelligence assessments to ensure they are accurate, high quality, and digestible for senior leaders.
  • (3) Serving as an advisor and providing regular briefings to senior leaders and decision makers on foreign nuclear capabilities and/or related national security issues.

Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
